HAURAKI DRAINAGE.

MEETING OF COUNCIL. The regular meeting of the Hauraki Plains County Council was held yesterday, Cr. J. C. Miller presiding over Crs. F. J. Mayn, T. McLoughlin, J. H. Nicholson, C. ,W. Parfitt, W. G. Hayward C, W. Harris, H. J. Hare, the clerk (Mr E. Walton), and the engineer (Mr F. Basham). VOTE OF SYMPATHY. immediately after the meeting was formally opened the chairman said that all members knew the sad news. He would move that the Council pass a vote of sympathy by standing in silence This was done, and on Or. Harris’ motion an adjournment, was made till 12.30 p.m. out of respect to the memory of the late Prime Minister. HIGHWAYS ROUTE. The engineer reported that after having a conversation with the chairman of the No. 2 Highways Council he had written to the Highways Board asking that the Orchard East and Tnrua-Netherton roads be declared temporary highways until such time as Pekapeka Road was metalled. Until then the bitumen road would take the traffic, and the adoption of it as a temporary highway would mean that a maintenance subsidy could be collected. PIPIROA FERRY. In reply to Cr. Parfitt the clerk said that nothing further had taken place in regard to the proposed ferry. at Pipiroa. Mr Dodd, of Gibbons, Ltd., was still away, so the question of fares could not be settled. He had learned .that there was a proposal to form a company in Thames to run a ferry if the council was agreeable. He had replied that the council would umlouotedly consider an application if made. On Cr. Parfitt’s motion the clerx was instructed to write to Mr Dbdd and ask him to submit a Kcale of charges for the proposed ferry. KEREPEEHI POUND. The Commissioner of Crown Lands forwarded a copy of an Order-in-Council vesting section 4, Block VII., Ke.repeehi Township, in the council as a public pound site. HORAHTA DRAINAGE. The Chief Drainage Engineer wrote with reference to. the Horahia-Opou ■special drainage district and the council’s resolution undertaking to provide the sum of £1450 towards the cost of the work. He stated that the work was nearly completed, and so far no satisfactory arrangement had been made by the council in the way of reimbursement to the department for the amount guaranteed. He asked what steps were being taken by the council to pay off the amount. The cle,rk explained that’ for a long time it had been impossible to raise the loan, but recently it had been possible to get. money from the Public Trustee. HOSPITAL ADMINISTRATION. The circular letter from the Kiwitea County Council in reference to hoviptel administration, as already published in the “Gazette,’ received support from the council. ROAD siqns. A circular memo was received from the Counties’ Association advocating the adoption of standardised road signs as and . when opportunities arose. . The suggestions were approved or and the letter referred to the engineer for action. AUCTIONEERING AREA. The Department of Internal Affairs forwarded a copy of Order-in-Cou licit declaring the county a special district for the purpose of the Auctioneers Act, 1908. PUKAHU WEST ROAD. .1. Wakeham, Netherton, wrote stating that the Minister for Lands had promised to have Pukahu West Road graded up if not already done. It was desired that the county engineer go over the ground with the lands drainage engineer and prove that the road had not been graded, and that, the council make representations to have the work completed.—Agreed to. ANNUAL MEETING. It was decided that after the annual meeting for the election of chairman on May 27 a special meeting be held to paps special orders altering the boundaries of the water supp y area, striking rales for the Kirikin and Maukoro bridges, and general business. GENERAL business. In reply.to Cr. Parfitt the engineer said that the grader was working its way rcund the county and in time would reach Pipiroa. .

On Cr. Hare’s motion the acquisition of a flag and flagpole was authorised. The engineer was instructed to loolc into the question of removing stumps from Pekapeka Road and grading UP certain portions. In reply to Cr. Hayward the engineer said thta he had visited the southern portion of Awaiit and discussed the reading question with the set-leis. There was no likelihood o. doing anything out of rates, and a •special loan was all that he could recommend. At Cr. Parfitt’s request the cleik was instructed to ask the Northern Steam Ship Company for a return of inuard and outward cargo from Pialw River ports, so that the committee appointed to go into the question of taking over the wharves would have t basis to work on.
