FIRE IN MAIN STREET.
GOOD SAVE BY BRIGADE. DWELLILNG ROOM GUTTED. A tire was discovered, fortunately in its incipient stages, in the dwelling portion of the jewellery establishment occupied by Mr W. McC allay in No : . manby Road, Paeroa, on Friday last. Shortly atibr 2 p.m. a passerby noticed smoke belching out from between the weather-boarding on the northern side of the building. After advising the owner of the building, whose office is next door, he entered tlie room and found that a sea-grass chair, on which was a kapok cushion, was blazing against the'wall near the window. From that the had caught alight and ha’d. set fire to the wulipaper and lining.
Members of tlie fire brigade, under Captain W. Moore, were quickly on tlie scene, and a few seconds later tlie reel and hose arrived. The fire-men-quickly had the fire confined to tlie one room and to one side of the wail. •
The furniture was damaged »y snmke ami water, the piano suffejing tlie wot st, the instrument being badlv charred on the side panels and top. Tiie origin of the, tire is a mystery, Mis MeCullay and her daughter having been away from,Taeroa for three davs before the outbreak, and a fire hut’, not been lighted in the room for several days.
It is understood that the N.Z. Insurance Co., Ltd, holds a policy for £575 on the stock in. the shop .and. the furniture in the dwelling portion. Th* building is also insured in the same office for £5OO.
