A combined meeting of the Paeroa Rugby Union and the Referees’ Association is to be held-this evening to consider the' advisability of revising the rules. - ,
The West Football Club to Netherton last Saturday and engaged in friendly games' with the local teams. West won both matches, the seniors by 9 points, to 8 and the juniors by 6to 3. The gams were keenly contesled, and augured well for a bright season ahead.
Speaking at the public meeting of retiring councillors in the Gaiety Theatre, Paeroa, on Tuesday evening last,- the Mayor (Mr W. Marshall) said that the greatest enemy to the movement of all community good ami progress was individual selfishness, intrigue, and prcssusc. for personal gain.
A fair number of shooting parties are in the upper reaches of the Piako and Waitoa streams; but big bags are not expected, as owing to the dryness of the season the ducks have gone, probably, to the sea marshes on the West Coast, and will not return unless rough- weather comes. Reports from Patetonga indicate a large number of pheasants in that locality, and pukeko are very plentiful in th© Awaiti.
At the local Magistrate’s Court, before Mr J. H. Salmon, S.M., this morning. judgment for plaintiff by default wa ’- given.in the following cases : Farrar and Parkes v. P. N. Aro, £7 ts, costs £1 16s 6d; Brenan and Co., Ltd., v. W. Pearcey, £3 7s, costs £1 3s 6d,; w. Fleming and Son, v. W. Pearcey, £3 Is 6d, costs £1 5s 6d. R. Gibson was ordered to pay Rose Bros., Ptttarurn, £5l 3s 3d, and costs £2 2s, forthwith, in default 51 flays’ Imprisonment in Auckland Gaol.
The well-known and popular steamer Taniwha has resumed her regular run in the Pa,eroa-Auckland service after having been laid up for over a month. During the time the Taniwha was in dock in Auckland she underwent an extensive overhaul. A new upper-deck has been put down, and in addition to the thorough cleaning of her engines the cabins have been renovated and painted throughout. The old ship is looking particularly fresh and gay at present, and Is running as sweetly as on the day she was launched.
A reminder is given that tlie annual householders’ meeting for the purpose of receiving the annual report of the outgoing committee and .the election of a new committee will be hel;l in the Soldiers' Club'this evening, at 7.30 o’clock. It is hoped that the appreciation of the work done at the Paeroa District- High School by the teaching staff and committee will be shewn in a practical manner by the parentis, ex-pupils, and senior school roiling up in large numbers to the meeting tO-night.
The adjourned esae of Joseph A. Cleary, flaxcutter, Tirohia, who was charged with trespass on the course or the Ohinemuri Jockey Club during the progress of the race meeting in March lost, .when he was a person excluded under the r«gulations, was concluded at the local Magistrate’s Court, before Mr J. H. Salmon, S.M., this morning. Mr ; C, N. ,o'Neill appeared for defendant, and entered a plea of guilty.under a misapprehension. Defendant was convicted and fined £2. with 12s costs. Fourteen days wejre allowed in which to find th? money. ..
