MEETING GF PLAINS BODY. A meeting of the Hauruki Plains Chamber of Commerce, was held at Ngatea on Tuesday evening, Mr W. E. McKay presiding over Messrs N. G. Crabbe, E. N. Davies, C. McTaggart, C. S. Foster, F. E. Stimpson, L, Buckingham, G. Phillips, S. McKay, and H. Dent, (secretary). COMBINED STOCK SALE.
in reply to .the chamber’s suggestion that the. various auctioneering companies operating in -he district should hold one combined sale instead ol two within a few days of each other, the Farmers’ Auctioneering Co, wrote stating that it had communicated. with the N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency on the matter, and would advise the results, later. TELEGRAPH MESSENGER It was remarked by a member that the representations of the chamber for a telegraph message boy to be appointed at Ngatea had already borne fruit, and the boy would arrive in a few days. SHIPPING. Complaints were voiced concerning the inadequate size of the steamer placed on the- Piako River service in place of the s.is. Waipu, resulting in much cargo being left behind on every trip. In addition, owing to the greater draft of the vessel, the, timetable could not be depended upon. The secretary was instructed to communicate with the manager of the. Northern Company on the matter. MAILS BY STEAMER. A letter was received from the chief .postmatser at Thames with reference to the chamber’s request that the steamer should carry a mail to ano from Auckland. He stated that the additional mail was not warranted, as Ngatea was well served by three inward and three outward mails daily, except on Saturdays. * FREIGHT ON VEGETABLES. In reply to the chamber’s request the Northern Steam Ship Co. wrote istuting" that a further reduction in the rate of freight charged on vegetables and eggs could not be granted, as the existing scale of charges wks very low’, being only 12s 6d pqr ton. SPEED OF MOTORS. It was decided that the Countv .Council be asked to have notices prominently exhibited drawing attention to the proximity of the school, and to the maximum speed, allowed for motor vehicles through the township. SERVICES OF POSTMASTER. A vote of appreciation of the sei’ L vices rendered by Mr J, M. Robb, the local postmaster, who has received notice of transfer, was carried. GANGWAY TO STEAMER. It was reuolved that a letter be sent to the Northern Steam Ship Co. asking that a gangway be provided for the use of passengers at the Ngatea wharf. IMMIGRATION POLICY. The question of. the policy of the Immigration Departments of Great Britain and New Zealand was brought up by Mr E. N. Davies, and an interesting discussion ensued. Opposition to the chamber taking action in the matter was countered by Mr Davies, who contended that increased population of the district should appeal to business men. Finally it was decided that the following remit be sent to the Associated Chambers of Commerce Conference : "That this chamber endorses the opinion of Mr List as expressed in his public speech* before the Taranaki chamber, and is of opinion that a greater distribution of British people upon the lands of the British Dominions ishould be, facilitated in order to prevent congestion of population within cities and limited areas. PRIME MINISTER’S ILLNESS. ' The chamber passed a motion of sympathy with the Prime Minister and his family in His present illness.
