SHOOTING SEASON.

OPENING ON FRIDAY. GOOD PROSPECTS FOR GAME. The shooting season for pheasants, black swan, duck, Australian and Canadian quail, opens on Friday next, May 1. Mr D. Leach, secretary of the Ohiiiemuri Acclimatisation Society, has received advice from the Auckland society, that the. Government has declared an open season for pukeko in this district, for the month of May only. After May 31 the birds will; be protected by legislation.. . - The district of the Ohiiiemuri society its an extensive one, embracing as it. does the whole of the Ohinemuri County, portion of the Hauraki Plains County, and a portion of the - Piako County. .To anyone not familiar with the area, it is pointed out that the boundaries are those of the bld Ohinemuri County.

There seems' to be every indication that game will be plentiful in the district this season, and large numbeis of pheasants have been seen. Ducks, too, appear to be fairly in evidence, but the exceptionally dry autumn has caused rather a shortage of water in the various lagoons and back-waters frequented by duck, and the birds have been flying farther afield for food and rest ; but as soonas the weather breaks it is anticipated that they will return to. their old haunts. . ’

' For the modest sum of £1 game licenses can be obtained from Mr Le.tch, the local secretary. Sportsmen are asked to remember that every license taken out enables the society to buy .birds for liberation, an 3 otherwise carry on the important work o’f acclimatisation, and it. i? hoped that this season sportsmen will come forward liberally and assist the society, and incidentally help to put this district on a footing second to none for game.
