Practically no progress has been made for some time witli tlie metalling of. Kaihere Road. At present the road is metalled from the Ngarua wharf to a few chains beyond Pouariia Road corner, but as the road from the top of the canal to the wharf is closed while being raised up with dredged spoil the metal will be of little use during the coining winter for tlirough traffic. The alternate route by the Pouarua and Torehape roads will not stand winter traffic, and it appears that Kaihere and beyord will be cut off from the rest of th'? Plains unless the winter proves an excetpionally dry one. The delay in the metalling work has been caused by lack of supplies of stone.

Speaking at the Citizens’ Commemoration Service at Paeroa on Anzac Day His Worship the Mayor (Mr W. Marshall) said he felt it was a reproach to the citizens of Paeroa that the town had not yet taken steps to erect, a war memorial. He would gladly, give a lead in the matter, but realised that times had not been too prosperous, and it was useless undertaking the project unless whole-heart-ed support and enthusiasm was fortncoming. He trusted that the incoming council would take the matter up seriously and push it to a successful conclusion.
For tlie first time for many years a flag was flown from the flagstaff on Primrose. Hill, Paeroa, on Anzac Day. It appeals that a number of years ago the halyards rotted away, and it was rather a difficult task to lower the top-mast and put in new ropes. Howeve], the Mayor (Mr W. Marshall), assisted by several public-spirited men, took the work in hand on Thursday last and put the flagstaff in working order. It is the intention.of the Eorough Council to keep the flagstaff in repair in future, and a flag will ba flown from that point on auspicious and ceremonial occasions.
What kind - of tobacco do you prefer —mild, medium, or full ? if you have been long a worshipper at the shrine of My Lady Nicotine you. have doubtless sampled all sorts of brands at one time or another, and have your preferences. But have you ever tried toasted tobacco ?' It -is quite a new idea. The leaf is carefully .toasted, am', this process develops the flavour and aroma in quite a surprising way. It’s like eating salt with nuts or mustard with beef or cheese. You can tes* this for yourself, because the New Zealand tobaccos, now so much in evidence, are all toasted, Hence their delightful fragrance and flavour. Aud unlike most of the imported brands they contain such a small percentage of nicotine that they may be smoked pipe after pipe “till the cows come home” without unpleasant or harmful consequences. They won’t bite the tongue, and appeal to all tastes. Riverhead Gold is aromatic. Toasted Navy Cut (Bulldog) a pleasing medium, and Cut Plug No. 10 (Bull’s Head) a fine full-flavoured tobacco*
