VALEDICTORY.

= — MR. C. HALLIDAY. A pleasing little function took place at the local office of the. Public Works Department when the members of the engineering and clerical staffs assembled to say farewell to Mr Cyril Halliday. who has held the position of chief clerk at that office for the past eignt years and who is now undei. tiansfei to a similar position at Taumarunui. In a few well-chosen remarks Mr L. May, district engineer, on behalf of the staff, handed Mr. Halliday a silver tea and coffee service, and in doing so spoke in eulogistic terms of the manner in which he had carried out his duties. The speaker also' paid tribute to the sterling qualities of Mr Halliday and expressed genuine regret that they were losing him from their midst, and in .conclusion wished Mr and Mrs Halliday good health and every succses in his new sphere. Mr R. B. Pejilington, on behalf of the drafting room staff, supported the remarks made by Mr May, and stated that the loss of Mr. Halliday in loeff cricket and tennis circles would be severely fejt.

Mr Halliday suitable responded. The opportunity was also taken to formally welcome Mr T. Wilkinson, who has succeeded Mr Halliday,
