PAEROA WEST CLUB.
ANNUAL MEETING
There was a large and enthusiastic
attendance of members and supporters of . the West Football Club at the annual meeting, held in Mr W. Bains rooms, Paeroa, on Monday evening, the president, Mr E. Edwards, presiding.
REPORT AND BALANCE-SHEET. The Annual report which read as follows, was adopted.
“With the presentation of the annual report and balance-sheet of the West Football Club’s 23rd year your committee desires to express its appreciation of your eo-operaton during its term of office. "Your committee specially stresses the weak state of the finances, and trusts that the coming season will be an epoch-making one for the club. "In December the club, in the sudden death of Mr F. J. Wells, lost one of its best supporters. Wour committee extends to the bereaved relatives its heart-felt sympathy. “With the resignation and subsequetn departure from New Zealand of Mr I. Poland the cl.ub lost an energetic member and capable secretary. A memento of association with the West club was presented) to him -at the annual social. '
"The club teams secuied a fair position in the competitions. For the McCullay Shield the senior team was bracketed as runner-up. The junior team played determinedly throughout, and in spite of accidents took the field, but suffered defeat in a final play-off for, the junior cup. The thirdgrade team is to be congratulated on. winning the cup. Your committee expresses its appreciation of the team •spirit and keenness of the third-grade boys. ■
“The medals for competition were awarded by the selectors as follows: Mr Edwin Edward’s .medal for beet’ senior back, I. Poland; Mr E. Neil’s medal for best senior forward, A. Jennings; Mr H. Welsh’s medal for best junior back, L. Nield ; best junior forward, R. Shaw; Mr W. Lawrence’s medal for best, third-grade player, J. Gunn.
"The proceeds of the annual social were handed to J. Verran, a junior who had sustained serious 1 injury and had been' in hospital for some weeks. The annual social was a decided success, and good fellowship prevailing helped to an enjoyable gathering.
“From a financial point ot view the past season has not been .altogether, successful. Your committee feels its duty to emphasise prompt payment of subscriptions by all members. Who-, thpr by indifference or evasion, many members have failed to jay up, as the balance-sheet clearly shows. Your committee desires to recommend an Energetic endeavour to obtain subscriptions.* ‘
"Your committee desires to congratulate two club players as Thames Valley representatives, and also playres in senior and junior representative fixtures.
“Your committee also wishes to heartily congratulate the old rival club, the East Football Club, on seciving the se'nior and junior trophies. “In conclusion, we thank you for loyal support, and trust the coming season of 1925, both in the field and financially, will be a record due in the annals of the West Football Club."
The balance-sheet showed that receipts totalled £l5 19s 7d, and the expenditure was £l5 17s 7d, leaving, a credit balance of 2s.
Considerable discussion, and not a little adverse comment, took place in regard to the number of outstanding subscriptions. The president said that owing to thbre being several changes of secretaries since the last aimual meeting it had been a difficult .matter for the acting-secretary, Mr K. Slyfield, to arrive at the club’s true position. After the chairman had made an appeal to members to pay their subscriptions and dues promptly the bal-ance-sheet was adopted. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The election of officers resulted as follows :— Patron, Mr R. W. Evans (re-elect-ed) ; vice-patron, Mr G. A. Bush (reelected) ; president, Mr E. Edwards (re-elected) ; vice-presidents, Messrs R. Hodson, J. Walmsley, S. J. Hedge, J. W. Silcock, W. Collier, E. E, Neil, R. Chamberlain, H. M. Shand, I. J. Ellis, R. B. Dunlop, R. G. Southby, H. E. Butler, D. Leach, Bert Neil; secretary and treasurer, Mr K. Slyfield; general committee, Messrs J. Crosby. Bert Neil, R. Shaw, W. Taylor, H. M.. Shand, J. Walmsley; delegates to Paeroa Rugby Union: Messrs J. Crosby, W. Taylor, H. M. Shand, J. Walmsley, E. Edwards, K. Slyfield. Black and white were agreed to as the club colours. DONATION OF MEDALS. The president offered to donate a medal for the senior backs, and Mr J. Crosby offered a medal for the most improved junior. Another medal was also offered by Mr E. V. Slyfield, for the most improved third-grade player. It was decided to recommend the committee to appoint judges to select the players during the season to receive the medals,. GENERAL. The question of adhering to tbfe. boundary system evoked a keen discussion. and opinions were very divided bn the question. Finally the matter was left in the hands of the delegates. It was decided to write to Te Arolia and, if possible, arrange, for a junior match at Te Aroha on Saturday week. The matter of securing a suitable playing area was left in the hands of the delegates to take up with the Union.
Subscriptions were fixed at 5s for seniors and juniors, and 2s 6d for third-grade players. On the motion of Mr Crosby it was resolved that in the event of any player being unfinancial during any period of the season the secretary is io notify the captain of the team concerned.
