THAMES-HIKUTAIA ROAD.

STATE REALISED BY COUNCIL. ENGINEER TO REPORT. During general business at the Thames County Council meeting yesterday when members • were making requests for attention to roads in their ridings; and the requests were being granted, Cr. Cox rose and asked the chairman'if he had not noticed that councillors frequently asked for work on subsidiary roads, but neve*' on the main road.

Cr. Alley said that the work he was referring to was on a road from whicn rates were received.

Cr. Cox said that lie did not wish to say anything against the request, but it was significant, to his mind, that requests for work on the main road were conspicuoujs by their absence, and there was no question, that it was in a very bad state.

Councillors then vied with each other in pointing out the badness of portions of the highway in their ridings.

The chairman mentioned having broken two springs and not having said anything about the occurrence previously. Cr. McCormick said there was no doubt that the road was a disgrace, and he was prepared to move that it be attended to.

The chairman pointed out that the work would be a charge on the general fund account, and not on the riding accounts, as the road was a portion o2 the main highway. He moved that the engineer go into the matter of scarifying the road and submit proposals- to the Highways Board.

Further discussion then, ensued as to which portions should receive attention, various sections being termed abominable, atrocious, disgraceful, etc.

The motion was seconded by Cr. McCormick and carried, Cr. Cox remarking that it was a step in the right direction.
