DISTRICT NEWS.

karangahake. FOOTBALL. On Saturday. lajst West and Karangahake met on the Mackay town Domain. Both clubs were strongly represented, and a' very keen, interesting game resulted. A few minutes after the opening a breach by one of the Karangahake players gave West a penalty, and Sinnett kicked a splendid goal.. This reverse stimulated the home team, and within a very ■short time J. O’Brien, after a spectacular run. succeeded in crossing the line, a try which he converted. The play during the remainder of the match was very even. B. Hardman scored a try for Karangahake, which was unconverted, while Jack Rackham also crossed thd line. Hardman converting. These were the only points scored, the game ending Karangahake 13, West 3. Mr E. Smith was the referee. Next Saturday the return match between Waikino and Karangahake will be played at Waikino. VALEDICTORY. On Saturday evening a complimentary social was tendered to Mr. and Mrs T. Curran in the Karangahake Holl on the eve of their departure for Ireland. During the evening cards, dancing, and musical items provided tlv. means of spending a very pleasant time, at the conclusion of which Mr J. B. Morris presented Mr and Mrs Curran with suitable mementos of their stay in Karangahake. Mr Curran, who hap been in charge of the local railway station for the last four years, has, by his tactful manner and obliging nature, made himself very popular with all those who have had business dealings with him. The general regret expressed at their departure speaks volumes of the esteem and respect in which Mr ami Mrs Curran are held.

Tn accepting the gifts—a beautiful travelling rug and a brief-bag—Mr Curran took the opportunity of thanking the residents of the district for the kindneps and goodwill extended to both Mrs Curran and himself, while he also expressed the regret felt by both at their departure.

The successful euchre players were Mrs W. Marsh and Mr R. Griffin.
