LAST SATURDAY’S MATCHES.

There was a large attendance of. members) and friends at the Paeroct Tennis Club’s lawns on Saturday afternoon to witness the A team play an inter-club match with Hikutaia. Th? weather was ideal, and the lawns were in splendid playing condition. Al* hough the home team defeated the visitors by five points the game was close and. interesting throughout, and the result hung in the balance until the last set was finished. During the afternoon a dainty afternoon tea was served by the lady members of the club. »

Men’s Singlets: H. Thorp beat H. Morrison. 7—2 ; Miller lost to D, Mackay, 2—7; F. Thorp lost to Gibb, 4 —l', Kenny lost to Barry, I—7; O’Neill lost to Elliot, 4—7 ; Wells beat Samson, 7 —4.

Ladies’ Singles : Miss J. Ellis beac Miss Gibb, 6—4 ; Miss L. Thorp lost to Miss G. Gibb, 5 —6 ; Miss C. Taylor bent Miss Elliot, 6—4 ; Miss M. Taylor beat Miss Smith, 6—o. Men’s Doubles : H. Combined Doubles : Aliss Argali and Mitchell beat Miss Halligan and Johnson, 7 —4. Totals: Paeroa lOS. Netherton 88. PLAIN’S COMPETITION. CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS. The semi-finals and finals of the. matches for the championship medals in the competition organised by the Hauraki Plains Tennis Association were played on the courts of the Turua club in the presence of a large gathering of enthusiasts from all parts of the Plains on Saturday last. Play was of a high standard, and inoct of the matches were more even than the scores indicate.

Jn the ladies’ semi-finals Mis Speedy beat Miss Wallace 6—o, 6—o, and Miss Duffy having won. by defauc she met Mrs Speedy in the final, the latter winning by 6 —3, 6 —2. In the men’s competition G. L. Griffiths beat M. O’Connor 6 —4, 6—2, and F. C. Robinson beat D, G. McMillan 6—3, 3—6, 6 —4 in the semi-finals, and in the finals Griffiths beat Robinson 2—6, 6 —l, 7—5. This match w.ais particul.arly interesting. Robinson played very well, and though he gained many points by his opponent’s faults great credit is due to him for the fight he put up.

At the conclusion of the match the president of the association presented the winners with 'the medals which had been donated for the purpose by M> - J. C. Devereaux and Mr Ford, manager of Stewart, Dawson’s, Ltd., Auckland.
