The first challenge match of the season • for the Howell Williams Memorial Shield was played mi Saturday between the Waitakaruru (holders) and Hopai club teams, and resulted in the Waitakaruru team winning by seven sets to five. Men’s Doubles: Griffiths and Otter beat Murphy and Robb, 6 —3 ; Stretton and Hamilton lost to S. and E. Coppins, 2 —6; Crockford and Barlbw beat Vowles and Waite, 6 —2. Ladies’ Singles: Mrs Barlow lost to Mrs Speedy, I—7; Miss Barrie lost to Miss Costello, 6 —B. ' Ladies’ Doubles: Mrs Barlow and Miss Harris lost to Mrs Speedy and Mi-s Costello, 2 —6. Combined Doubles: Miss Beaver .: and Crockford beat Mrs Vowles and Vo vies, 6 — i ; Miss Preston and Barlow beat Mrs Motion and Waite, 6—l. TURUA DEFEATS THAMES. A match between teams representing the Turua Club and the Methodist Club, Thames, was played at Thames on Saturday, the result being a win for the. visitors by 10 sets to 6, or 117 games to 104. The Turua team comprised Messrs F. C. Robinson, W. Davies, D. G. McMillan, J. L. Brownlee, C. Scott, G. J. . Walker,. J. M. Devereaux, G. Elvin, Mrs Clotworthy, Mrs Valentine, Miss E. Clotworthy, and Miss Schmidt. Following are the details : — Men’is Singles: Robinson beat Garland, 9—B; Davies beat’ S. Danby. 7—6 ; McMillan beat Marshall, 9—B Brownlee beat A. Danby, 9—6 ; Scot: beat Currie, 9 —B; Walker lost to Sexton, 8 —9. Men’s Doubles : Robinson and Davies beat Garland and S. Danby, 9—B; McMillan and Brownlee beat Marshall and A. Danby, 9—-5 V: Scott and Walker beat Sexton ahnx Currie. 9—4 ; Elvin and Devereaux . beat Gwynne and Twentyman, 9—3., Ladies’ Singles: Mrs Clotworthy lost, to Miss Forrest, 6—7 ; Mrs Valentine lost <c Mrs Read, 3 —7.
