FIRE NEAR NGATEA.
RESIDENCE DESTROYED. NOTHING SAVED. A four-romed house, owned and occupied by Mr A. F. Simonds, farmer and cream cartage contractor, Orchard East Road, was totally destroyed by fire at about 2 o'clock on Monday morning.
The origin of the lire is not known. Mr Simonds and a boy employed by him retired to bed in different rooms about 9 p.m., and were awakened by the crash of a picture falling in the kitehen. That room was then enveloped in flames, and it was quickly seen that there was no chance of extinguishing the conflagration. Efforts were made to save some valuables, but the flames spread so rapidly th nt tho two men had to get out of the building with their clothing in one hand and whatever they could seize, in Hie other.
The house was insured for £3OO aiid the furniture for £l5O.
