TAG ON BALANCE-SHEET.
UNAUTHORISED EXPENDITURE. HAURAKI DRAINAGE BOARD. Lengthy correspondence regarding a tag on the board’s balance-sheet in connection with the travelling expenses of the chairman and clerk, who recently proceeded to Wellington and succeeded in obtaining a big Government subsidy, was discussed at Friday’s meeting of the Hauraki Drainage Board. Members of the board receive no payment for attending meetings or supervising work, but their luncneon expenses are paid out of the board’s funds. The tag on the balance-sheet stated that the travelling expenses and the cost of the dinners had been charged to “unauthorised expenditure, making the total £3O and some shillings. The limit allowed under this head is 1 per cent, of the rate, which works out at £15.”
The Government Auditor-General had written asking tor an explanation, and the clerk had replied setting out the full factp of the case. So far no reply has been received, and members are joking about having to bring £3 each next meeting day.
