HORAIHA-OPOU AREA. minister to be approached. At the meeting of the Horahia Drainage Board on Firday last Mr J. M. Thompson reported upon, the Minister for Lands concerning the provision of a drain from the Horahia -Opou area to the Wharepoa-Kere-peehi road. The Minister had promised a £ for £ subsidy up to £l5O. Mr W.~ E. Hale said it was necessary for a comprehensive scheme to be 'decided upon. A special meeting should be held and the proposal submitted to a competent engineer fur his advice. It could then be adopted as the board’s policy. The diain to Wharepoa Road and the requests of the various deputations would all be incorporated in the scheme. J Mr McDuff expressed the view that such a scheme would take a long time to get going. The vaiious requests were urgent, and would not bear delay until next summer. Reverting to the Horahia-Opoii-Wharepoa Road drain, Mr Thompson said that, as the board had no funds or loan money, and a long period s would lapse before this would be obtained, and that portion of the £2OOO grant could not be used to lift the subsidy, the work could not be carried out for a long time unless" the subsidy was converted into a free = grant. This sum would not be suffi- ’ cient to complete the fencing of the drain and the bridging, but" the settiers would- probably be willing to undertake this if the drain was dug. . .
