WORKS COMMITTEE’S REPORT.

PROGRESS DURING THE MONTH.

The following statement was presented at last Thursday’s meeting of the Paeroa Borough Council by the Works Committee:—

“The contractor has completed the formation of Coronation. Street. There were two bad places on the side of this road where, the water lay to sucii an extent that the formation oi a solid foundation wais impossible Arrangements were therefore made with the contractor to fill in same, and the extra cost has been £2O. “Tenders were called for carting approximately 700 yards of metal to Coronation Street. H. Mitchell "'as the lowest tenderer at 3s 4d and 4 s 4d a yard. The conditions provided for a minimum of 30 yards a day, and the contract was signed on January 28. As no metal has been carted, we recommend that the contract be cancelled and the work let to the next lowest tenderer. Your committee regrets having to take this step, but considers that the councillors and ratepayers must have the work done.

“The Assistant District Engineer for Railways has given us an assurance that the work in Taylor’s Avenue and Moore Street will be pushed on vigorously. It is intended to lay a line in these streets and use the engine and trucks. We recommend that the streets be closed for traffic dining this construction.

“A driver for the roller has been engaged, and he commenced his duties on Tuesday last. “We wisli to place on record our appreciation of the assistance given to us on the roller by Mr Phillips, Who did his very best to oblige when we were wanting a driver.”
