FIRE AT HIKUTAIA

MILKING PLANT DESTROYED.

EXPLOSION FROM ENGINE,

A disastrous fire occurred shortly after five o’clock on Saturday afternoon at Hikutaia, a large milkingshed, the property of Mr A. Duncan, Maratoto Road, being razed .to the ground. In addition to the loss of the building, which was a commodious and up-to-date milking-shed, a threecow milking machine, benzine engine, separator, and other machinery and extras were destroyed.

From particulars available it is understood that the engine had just been started and one of the family was in the act of filling the benzine tank when by some means an explosion occurred, and the engine and room became enveloped in flames. Fanned by a stiff north-easterly breeze, the flnme-i spread with amazing rapidity, and it was only with considerable difficulty, and not without a certain amount of risk, that .the cows were released safely from the bails. The milking was Insured, but there was no insurance on the shed or contents.
