PAEROA BOROUGH.

—.— MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING,

The monthly meeting of the Paeroa Borough Council was held last evening. His Worship the Mayor (Mr W. Marshall) presiding over the following : Crs. T. P. Vuglar, H. M. Shand, G. P. Lamb, F. E. Flatt, P. E. Brcnan, W. Bain, J. W. Silcock, E. Edwards, and the town clerk (Mr W. C. Alexander). WILLIAM STREET SUBWAY.

The district engineer, N.Z. Railwayts, forwarded a plan of the proposed subway under the railway line near tne present youth signal cabin in William Street. He also pointed out that the crown of the road under the subway would be approximately the same level as the footpath in front of the railway cottage occupied by Mill G. Scuthby. It war moved by Cr. Edwards that thn council ask for a minimum .width of toft roadway and a 4ft raised footpa'h with a clearance of 12ft <n height tor the carriageway, the negotiations to be left in the hands of His Worship the Mayor. Seconded by Cr. Shand and carried. SCENIC RESERVE. The State Forest Service, Wellington, wrote in regard to the proposed se°.nic reserve near Karangahake township, stating that the land in question formed a portion of an area set apart under the Forests Act, 192122 ar a. provisional State forest, lhe roftucst to have the area reserved under the Scnecry Preservation Act could not, under the circumstances, he given effect to without special legislation, and as the Forest service was particularly interested in the protection of all permanent and provisional State forests from destruction by fire or otherwise, the wishes of the council would be amply safeguarded by retaining the land under its present preservation. • It way resolved to write .and ask for evidence of the land being set awlde as a provisional State forest. MOTOR VEHICLES ACT. Tne Department of Internal Affairs acknowledged receipt of copies of resolutions passed by the.council relative to motor-lorry regulations, together with a resolution approving of the draft regulations dealing with the licensing of motor drivers. The draft regulations respecting motor lorries came under provisions of the Public Works Act The Engineer-in-Chief, Public Works Department, wrote stating that the resolutions passed by the council would be carefully considered before the motor lorry regulations were issued CLOSING OF STREETS. In connection with the closing of portions of Johnson, Fraser, and Russell streets, the Commissioner of Crown Lands advised that the issue of the necessary title had been undertaken on recepit of a copy of the Bill, and action had been taken to arrange'for the preparation of the necessary Governor-Generals’ Warrant with a view to having the title to the area completed. As soon as the titles were ready notification would be forwarded by the District Land Registrar, Auckland. The Mayor said that apparently the department had the matter in hand, and the titles should shortly be fortncoming. HIRE OF ROLLER. The Hauraki Plains County Council applied to hire the borough road roller, scarifier, and driver for two months to complete work in the Netnerton riding before May next. • It was resolved to allow the use of the roller in a month’s time at a cost of £2 5s a day until such time as the main Plains-Paeroa road work Was undertaken, when the charge would be reduced to £1 2s 6d a day. In answer, to Cr. Bain the Mayor said that the borough council driver would accompany the machine, and would be expected to keep a check on the number of days’ work'and'the locality. The Plains County Council would be responsible for the wages of the driver. MOTORISTS’ CAMPING SITES. The Thames Valley Motor Traders’ Association, Te Arolia, .wrote asking 'for support and co-operation in tlie establishment of motor camping sites in and around Paeroa. Cr. Brenan explained the object of establishing camping grounds. The Mayor asked how were sanitary arrangements carried out, A Member: Catch-as-catch-caa methods. Cr. Brenan'said he thought that a portion of the domain might be set aside. Cr. Vuglar favoured the suggestion, and thought that the council should not lose the opportunity of popularising Paeroa. He did nor. think any charge should be made for the use of the ground. Cr. Brenan said that he had received a number of inquiries for camping sites during this summer. Cr. Silcock suggested that the mattex- be referred to the Ohinemuri County Council asking for its cooperation. The matter was referred to Crs. Sham! and Bain for a report. OPUKEKO DRAIN. Seven residents petitioned for a subscription towards the cost of deepening the -Opukeko drain. It was decided to contribute the usual amount of £2 10s, subject to the work being carried out to the satisfaction of the foreman. APPLICATION FOR WATER. Three residents of Claremont Avenue applied to have the water service extended to the boundaries of their properties, a distance of approximately six chains from the main. The applicants stated that they were not in xx position to find the extra pipes required from the 150 ft limit, and the cost of tapping the main, owing to the expense entailed in laying eight chains of pipes from the boundary to their residences. The Mayor said that the petitioners .were at present dependent on tank water. Cr. Brenan moved that the request

be granted subject to the payign £3 3s each connection fees iu"U accordance with the by-laws. and the council assist by supplying all / pipes at a cost that would consider-i| ably assist the applicants. Seconded by Cr. Lamb and carried. L REDUCTION OF WATER CHARGES. . Mrs J. Coote wrote pointing .out that as the Commercial Hotel was/ j now only tenanted by eight persons, - and she sought a reduction of £5 on ; <4 the water charges. It was resolved that as a portion of -' the hotel was sub-let tlie council : could not make any reduction in the charges already made, and to point : out that very liberal reductions had already been allowed on water", charges while the property was used onlv by the owner. r ; FAEROA HOSPITAL LEVY. The Thames Hospital Board advis-~3 exi that the amount to be levied on i the contributory local, authorities for 4 the l-acroa hospital was £3OOO, on ' <. wh’rh amount subsidy of £ tor £ was %;a pavable. The board intended ‘o spread the levy ovex- a period of two years, and the approximate rate on the rateable capital value would be l-16th of a penny. It was agreed to meet the levy. - The Mayor said that he had noticed i in a report of the recent Hospital Board meeting which had appeared in the "Gazette” that the board was> experiencing difficulty in keeping its staff up to full strength owing to inc’-eased number of patients at the institution, and that, surely, was another significant factor in favour of., the immediate establishment of a . baipital at Paeroa to assist in relieving the congestion. METALLING CONTRACT. Arising out of the Work’s Committoa s report in regard to the metal-. ; ling contract on Coronation Street a lo.’ixr discussion ensued as to whether; .... the contract of H. Mitchell should be; cancelled owing to nou-fulfilment of •; conditions. 7 -afCr. Bain favoured the contract be--ixxg given to the next tenderer. ; Cr. Vuglar objected, and said that Mitchel’ had been unfortunate ■should be given a chance. Cr. Silcock suggested that he should be allowed to carry on provided he was willing to secure assistance to make up the leeway. Cr. Flatt favoured the suggestion. Thu Mayor said that .the work was < now 14 days behind, and it was imperative that Coronation Street should be finished and opened for traffic be- J, tore the end of the month. It w,as xxot reasonable to expect any works to be held,up on account of contractors. If the xretal was not on the xoad before the wet weather the formation work would have to be done over again. It was was resolved that the Works Committee be authorised to cancel the coi’tract unless the contractor coul-.l give a guarantee that the work be completed within the specified time. ELECTRIC POWER. . Cr. Flatt asked what steps the council intended to take in connection with . making representations to the Minis- • ter in coxinection with obtaining elec- . 7 tricity in bulk. The Mayor said that the Finance 7 Committee would look into the position, and the eupport of the, whole council was required. There was no immediate hurry.
