LEVY ON CONTRIBUTING BODIES. PLAINS COUNTY OBJECTS.
The notification, of the Thames Hospital Beard’s intention to make a capital levy of £4lO Os lid for each of two years for the purpose pf erecting a maternity and casualty hospital at Paeroa came before the Hauraki Plains County Council yesterday. Cr. P.ariitt said that the capital cost was of small account in consideration ■ to the annual maintenance. He did not think there was any need for the hospital;
Cr. Hare pointed out that the hospital was a maternity and casualty hospital. Most of the cases would be sent to Thames, so a big staff would not be required.
Cr. Harris urged thatjwi objection be lodged to the proposal.
In reply to the chairman the clerk read portion of the Hospital Act which provided a right of appeal in cases where the expenditure was excessive. The point was to prove that the expenditure w.as excessive, said Mi 4 Walton. ’ < (
v 'he proposal was not one pf an excessive expenditure, and it could not be contende'd that it was so.
Cr. Hare said that the proposal could not be stopped.
Cr. Harris Said he was not agaiiust the Paeroa hospital, but the annual maintenance rate had to be taken into consideration. An appeal on the score of excessive capital expenditure could not be made, as it was not an expensive building.
In reply to a question the clerk said that the only reason that would justify an appeal would be that the building was not warranted.
Cr Parfitt said that a maternity annexe had just, been opened it Thames. He moved that an objection be registered on the score that the demands of the district did not warrant the expenditure.
The motion was carried, Cns. Hare and Nicholson voting against, and desiring their votes recorded.
