ELECTORAL ROLLS.

PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY. MORE INFORMATION URGED. At a meeting pE tlie executive of the New' Zealand Licensing Reform Association at Wellington on Wednesday last the question of compulsory enrolment under the amending Act of last session was discussed, and it was decided to send the following letter to the Minister to Charge of Electoral Department the (Right Hon. W. F. Massey) :— ■ “At a meeting of the executive of this association, held yesterday, the matter ofi enrolments under the Legislature Amendment Act of last session, came up for discussion, when the opinion was generally expressed that not one in ten of the electors of New Zealand know that they are automatically removed from all rolls, that they are personally responsible for securing their own enrolment, and liable to be fined, if not enrolled before March 6 next. It is held that the mere leaving of-forms at the doors by the postal department with a printed leaflet setting out the position of electois in formal terms its not sufficient notice or warning to the individual. This association therefore respectfully suggests that the Electoral Department send a personal notification to every elector who recorded a vote at the last election; and whose enrolment application under the new system has not come to hand by the tenth of this month (February) issuing a warning in emphatic terms that a breach of the law will be committed unless application for enrolment is made before March 6. My executive is confident that, unless this step is taken, and much greater publicity given to the position of citizens under the Act, a very unsatisfactory state of affairs will be created. My executive trusts that stops will be taken immediately to prevent the citizens from being placed in a false position in regard to this matter.”
