GAIETY THEATRE PICTURES. TO-NIGHT “HIGH SPEED.” When two young people decide they’ll elope, and the girl’s father and her richest suitor decide against the proposition, the finals are apt to be fast and furious throughout. Herbert Rawlinson and Carmelita Geraghty are the couple, and Otto Hoffman, the father, and Bert Roach the disgruntled suitor in the Universal-Raw-linson feature for to-night. “High Speed” is a typical Rawlinson role, but better than most of his recent ones, and offers action aplenty. It was directed by Herbert Blache from Frederick Jackson’s story. Its hero is a young amateur athletic star, and its heroine the daughter of the town’s financial king. They decide they’ll get married. SATURDAY NIGHT. “BLACK OXEN.” Revealing the effect of the widely discussed rejuvenation upon romance and alive with brilliant drama and rare beauty of dress and settings, Frank Lloyd's screen version of “Black Oxen,” a First National picture it to be shown to-morrow night. From the pen of Gertrude Atherton, because of its originality and modern atmosphere “Black Oxen” has been the best selling novel of 1923, and Mr Lloyd is said to have given it an elaborate picturisation. Corinne Griffith and Conway Tearle share the featured parts, Miss Griffith playing the dual personalities of Mary Ogden and, later, Madam Zatiannny, and Mr Tearle being cast as Lee Clavering, a cynical New York newspaper man who falls in love with the charming European-bred American girl. A majority of the scenes of the film play are laid in New York’s social sphere, with Hashes of the Austrian Court brought into the theme for reference. More than 5000 people appear in the action of the play, as audiences in three different theatre scenes, in an elaborate cafe sequence, and in direct support of the principals.
