SCHOOL HOLIDAYS.
e BREAKING-UP DAY. FUNCTIONS ON THE PLAINSMany of the schools on the Hauraki Plains held some sort of a function to celebrate tlie end of the year on Thursday or Friday last. In some places tliis took the form of a concert, at others a picnic, while others again presented prizes. At Netherton on Thursday evening "an excellent concert, contributed for tlifi greater part by school children, was held in the Public Hall. Had the building been twice the size it might have been possible to comfortably seat all those present. Choruses were sung by various groups of pupils, and an excellent playlet was presentedLittle Miss Isobel MeFetridge gave a recitation, as also did Miss H. Johnson and Miss D. Bourne. A pianoforte duet was played by Master and Miss Potter, and an exhibition of Highland dancing was given by Miss N. Chartreis. Songs were contributed by Mrs Adam, of Netherton, Miss Morrison, of Paeroa, Miss Armour, Mr G. Armour, Mr Mills, and Mr Sando, of Waihi; recitations by Mr H. Armour ; violin solos by Mr Turner, of Waihi l and bagpipe selections by Mr N. Charteris, of Kerepeehi. During the evening Mr W. Pennell, or. behalf of the Paeroa Rugby Union, presented Master K. Wilson, captain of the Netherton School football team, with the Primary Schools Rugby Football Shield, which trophy was won by Netherton last year without losing a match. At the conclusion of the concert supper was served and the floor cleared for dancing. At Turua on the same evening a school concert was held, a varied programme being presneted to a large and appreciative audience. Prizes for the highest marks secured by the girl and boy in the various classes, and for the scholars who made the most progress, were presented as follows: Standard VI., Francis Luke and Tom White, Eileen Crean : Standard V.. Edna Aberhart and Fred Griffiths, Norman Urquhart ; Standard IV.. Inez McCormick and Keith Hamilton, Rona oßneham‘, Standard TIL, Lily Clotworthy and Glen Olsen, John Mead; Standard 11., Dorothy Davies and Ronald Mules, Dora Walker; Standard 1., Ruth Boxall and Leslie Williams, Nancy Murray; Primers, Gwenith Zeigler and Wilfred Johnston, Patrick Cream After the concert a dance was held, many of the children participating. . tweaking-up day was a red-letter day for the pupils of the Kopuarahi school. On Friday afternoon the schoolroom was decorated v,ith paper streamers and coloured binloons, and in clie presence of their parents the pupils staged an enjoyabh concert. Prizes were then presented, after which an adjournment was made to the old school building, where a wellladen Christmas tree was found. Santa Claus had a present for each child. Afternoon tea was then handed round. Tn the evening a children’s paper fancy dress dance was held in the schoolroom. The annual picnic will be held shortly before school recommences next year. During the afternoon Master L. Candy, on behalf of the scholars, presented Mr C. R. Briggs, the headmaster, who has been appointed headmaster of the Paparoa school, with a case of military hair-brushes and a pocket wallet. He expressed tlie regret of the pupils at losing Mr Briggs, and their appreciation of the care anil attention he had given to their work, amusement, and games. A vote of appreciation was carried by prolonged applause. The following were the prize-win-ners : Standard VI., Leila Green 1, Phyllis McMillan 2; Standard V., Clyde Lawrence 1 and good attendance prize, Gorrie Miller 2; best science note-book, Standards V and VI.. Ada Candy, best writer, Arthur McMillan; Standard IV., Keith Lawrence 1 and good ■> attendance prize, Ethel Candy 2 ; best writer in Standards 111. and IV., Cecily Hegh ; attendance prize, Hazel Harwood; Standard I IL, Genie Beddie 1, Sophie Hudson 2 and attendance prize, Kitty Campbell 3; Standard IL, Evelyn Hegh 1, Josephine Hudson 2, Claude Campbell 3, Herman Bowkett good attendance; Standard 1., Lois Rogers 1, Ken Green 2 and prize for best writing in Standards I. and II.: Infants, Phyllis Bowkett best writer.
