The proficiency examination for Stantiard VI. pupils of the schools on the Hauraki Plains will be held tomorrow. A start has been made with the erection of the new post office in Ngatea. - Four men .are employed clearing the site, stacking timber, and preparing the foundations. At the inquest held by the district coroner, Mr J. Morley, J. 8., at Te Arolia on Saturday last touching the death of Wesley John Reed, the verdict wan that the deceased met his death by being accidentally drowned whilst bathing in the Waihoii River near Mangaiti. The local office of the Public Works Department anticipates paying out over £BOOO in wages to the gangs employed on the various public works in the district between now and Christinas eve. The men engaged on the railway- construction works are not included A striking instance of the valud of cow testing is recorded by an Otorohanga contemporary. A farmer not 20 miles from Otorohanga recently decided to cull out four of his worst cows, but in any cawe to get rid of one particular animal. Unfortunately this cow calved, and he was unable to move her immediately, and the testing officer passing he was induced to have tlie cow tested. She gave 701 b of butter-fat for the month. That farmer is now seriously considering whether appearances are not always deceitful and whether it is not the bettei policy to always make sure by testing.
Building permits for structures valued at £1556 were granted by the Hauraki Plains County Council during November. These included three residents, one shop, one motor garage, and one cowshed.
Have quail the homing instinct? The question (says the Waioa “Post”) has often been debated, but without definite conclusion. It is worthy of note in this connection that last summer a covey of five Californian quail frequented Victoria Park, Te Awaniutii, for several, weeks, being frequently seen on the bowling green and its vicinity. Then four of them disapi eared, the remaining cock bird putting in most of his afternoons parading the.park, calling and searching without apparent result, until one day it;, mate appeared at the head of a covey of about a dozen tiny quail. The whole flock was missed for a fortnight or so later, but during the past few days a pair of fullf-grown quail have taken up the 117. abode in the park, which is the borough, a few chains from Alexandra Street. The question of a quail’s homing instinct thus receives further support, though not actual confirmation.
Did you ever smoke toasted tobacco ? ft so you will know how the toaistprocess improves the flavour. It is delicious. Coffee-berrjes and tealeaves are roasted, otherwise no one would care to drink tea or coffee. Well', the same treatment is found to answer equally well with tobacco. Test this for yourself. The locally manufactured tobacco is now prepared it: that way. The result is astonishing* Select a brand to suit your palate in regard to strength, either Riverheai. Gold, the mildest of all, or Toasted Navy Cut (Bulldog), of medium strength ; or if you prefer a fuller body take Cut No. 10, the Bullhead label. The very first whi.'f will tell you that you are in for a superior article quite out of the common. You never get that same pleasant aroma with any of the ordinary tobaccos. And so smooth and mellow, with their small percentage of nicotine, these brands may be smoked with perfect immunity, and are recommended by experts and medical authorities.*
