TURUA TOWN BOARD.
MONTHLY MEETING. The regular meeting of the Turu-i Town Board was held on Wednesday evening, Mr J. Mules presiding over the following : Messrs A. C. Scott, S. G. W;iliums, F. Olsen, C. Bedford, J. T. Davies, J. McConnell, and J. E. Green, the clerk. TOWN HAUL,. The clerk reported on tiie lengthy negotiations that had taken place m endeavouring to raise the town hall loan of £3500. All inquiries to date had proved fruitless, and no further sources of finance were known of. The clerk was instructed to continue making inquiries. STREET LIGHTS' The clerk reported that he had communicated with Mr W. E. G- Willy, of the Thames Valley Power Board, in regard to the excessive failures of the. street lights. The lamps were not lasting anything like the stipulated time, and replacement was still costing about £1 a month. Mr Willy had taken up the matter with the Power Board engineers. Other towns with street lights were not having trouble. Mr Bedford said that perhaps the trouble was caused by the sudden alteration in the voltage when the dairy factory motor -was started. He had noticed great variations in the voltage on his battery-charging apparatus. The clerk said that the Power Board was doing its best lo remedy the matter, but up to the present apparently had not been able to find the defect in the system. Mr Willy desired the Town Board co formally complain so that the Power Boaid could take up the matter with the makers of the lamps if thought necessary. The clerk was instructed to. do as requested. THE RUADING SCHEME. The revised specifications for the board’s bitumen reading scheme as approved by the county engineer, and under- which the contract had been let, were read by the clerk, as also were the contracts and agreements signed and sealed by the chairman of the board nad the manager of the N.Z. Roads Co., Ltd., in regard to the arrangements for carrying out the worn, the taking over of the metal deposited on the concrete, with the landing gear, and also the method of payment. The position was that from Novdlnber 11, 1021, the contractor was solely responsible for everything, and the work is to be completed within three months under a penalty of £5 a week. The contractor expected to land his plant the following day (yesterday). DANGEROUS BRIDGE. . Mr Davies mentioned that during the day a serious accident had occurred a r the bridge on the corner of Piako Road owing to a horse shying and capsizing a gig into the drain. The bridge was very narrow, and being on a corner was very dangerousThe board had decided long ago tohave the matter attended to. The chairman said that unfortunately no money had been provided. Mr Bedford suggested replacing the bridge with concrete pipes. Mr McConnell said that this would not be practicable. A concrete arch would be the only alternative to widening the wooden structure. Mr Olsen pointed out that there were numerous similar bridges in the district. Mr Scott thought it would be a very difficult matter to widen the existing structure. The matter was left in the hands of the works committee. Messrs McConnell, Olsen, and Mules. TOWN FOOTPATHS. Complaints were voiced regarding the growth of grass on the footpaths, and it was decided to employ a man to cut it. FINANCE. Messi s S. G. Williams, J. T. Davies, and J. Mules were appointed a finance committee. Accounts totolljng approximately £lBO were passed for payment.
