PROPOSED PIPIROA FERRY.

CTo the Editor.! Sir,—At a public meeting held at Pipiroa on the evening of December 2 to ascertain the feeling of the district and, if possible, to urge the proposed ferry at Pipiroa, irregularities occurred and a dispute arose between myself and the chairman. I then assured those present that I would quote the authorities through the medium of your valued paper. Hence 1 quote J. Smyth Fleming, J.P., editor of the Clutha Leader: (1) “It is too much the practice to confer the office out of respect to the individual.” (2) “It is scarcely necessary to say that-any gentleman on taking the chair must abandon all ideas of seeking to carry out any particular views of his own, or to further any proceeding to which he personally feels inclined." (3) “He must show no leanings to one side or the other hi the course of debate, and must flavour no one more than another, whatever difference may exist ib lank, station, or ability.” Extract No. 1 is given for future enlightenment. Dealing with No. 2, I must utate that although this was a meeting to deal with a ferry, the chairman ispnet a good time pleading for a motion confirming the county’s, actions and bridge policy, and at last a feeble voice moved the required motion, and after further anxiety a seconder was found. Extract No. 3 : 1 point out that although I do not rank with the ratepayers of this district the meeting was a public one, and the chairman was entirely wrong in opposing my nomination as a delegate on the grounds of not being a ratepayer. It was a public meeting, and I am a citizen. GEORGE GOLDTHORPE.
