LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Next Sunday the Rev. J. M.. Beaufort, of Turua, will exchange with the Rev. F. B. Dobson and will conduct services as advertised. The Church of England annual bazaar will be held on November 20 in the Gaiety Theatre. Competitions in both cooking and cut flowers. Attractions for all.* The N.Z. Friesian Association has given a gold medal for the most points in the Friesian section at the Paeroa show provided there are at least twenty entries.

The Waihi “Telegraph” states that there are four bungalows in course of erection at Waihi Beach. One will contain eight rooms,, and is being built for Mr Frewin, of Kaipara;

The Paeroa Borough Council intends, to take a poll of ratepayers on three loan proposals. There is one for £6500 to purchase the gasworks, £6OOO for increased water supply, and £2OOO for house .connections.

The Works Committee of the Paeroa Borough Council is making every effort to prevent a repetition of last year’s experience when several jobs were started and remained unfinished all the winter owing to bad weather.

The new roller for the Paeroa Borough is due to arrive in a few weeks, after which, given suitable weather, the various street improvement works will probably be vigorously taken in hand and pushed to a completion.

Borough workmen are busy on the drain running through the domain; and it’ is hoped to finish the work before rhow day. It is suggested that after this drain is finished the domain footpaths should be tarred and sanded. During last month building permits to the value of £492 were granted by th-- Paeroa Borough Council. These were a grandstand for the Ohinemuri Jockey Club, additions to tearooms in Belmont Road, and additions to a residence in Cullen Street. The report of the Works Committee which was agreed to by the Paeroa Borough Council recommended the letting of a contract to Mr W. Shaw for the removal from, the library site, next to the post office section, of 200 yards of filling for the domain drain. The price was 2s lid per yard. The Paeroa Borough Council has decided to push on with the improvement of the street scheme during the summer weather, and unless it is of a very urgent nature any ether work will have to stand over. Exceptoin was taken by the Mayor to the tone and wording of a letter sent, to the Paeroa Borough Council, by a ratepayer, and the town clerk was instructed to write and point that out to the man. Some of the councillors who knew the writer declared that it was characteristic of the man, and .they were sure no insult was intended. After some discussion the tetter was simply received, so if he desires to have the subject matter dealt with the man will have to again write to the council. Cr. Hare states that he was misreported in the discussion on the alteration of the staff of the Hauraki Plains County Council. He was made to say in the report in the “Gazette” on Wednesday that Mr Basham, had told the previous meeting that with an assistant on the Plains and one at Thames he could act as engineer for both counties. Cr.. Hare says what he did say was that the engineer declared that with one assistant he could do the work of the two counties.

At ihe Thames Valley A., P., and H. show at Te Aroha awards were secured by Mr W. J. Hall, Matatoki, for Jerseys as follows : Reserve champion bull, reserve champion ccw, second for 3 years and over, third for cow 4 years or over, first for cow or heifer 3 years, third for pair heifers 2 years m milk, h.c. for yearling heifer, second for breeder’s gi;oup Wigg Cup, third for 2-year-old bull Armidale Cup, and third for best grade dairy cow on show ground.

No fewer than three communications were received by the Paeroa Borough Council from the Auckland branch of a pipe company. The first was addressed to the Mayor, and he was asked to please ring phone No. — for prices and further particulars. The chairman of the Works Committee also was invited to visit the works and was asked for the name of the borough’s consulting engineer. Four sheets of typewritten letter and a pamphlet were sent to the consulting engineer for the borough.

A striking feature of this week’s issue of the "N.Z. Sporting and Dramatic Review” is the double-page devoted to a composite photograph of enthusiastic patrons at the Wellington Racing Club’s meeting at Trentham. An animated set of snapshots appears covering the Auckland Racing Club’s spring carnival at Ellerslie, the farewell visit of their Excellencies being chronicled. The victorious All Blacks are shown in lively work during a couple of matches, while numerous miscellaneous items of overseas note have an attractive showing. Stage and motion pictures have a splendid showing.
