CROQUET.

« OPENING OF PAEROA CLUB. ENJOYABLE AFTERNOON SPENT. Perfect weather prevailed for the 21st official, opening of the Paeroa Croquet Club, which took place on Wednesday afternoon. Visiting player from Hikutaia, Waikino, and Te Aroha were present, as well as i large number of local players. in a neat speech the president, Mrs G. H. Taylor, welcomed the visitors and expressed the hope that they would spend an enjoyable afternoon. Reference was also made to the good work done by the domain superintendent. Mr W. Hamilton, in getting the lawns into such a satisfactory playing state in so short a time after topdressing. The president said that a lot of work had been done on the lawns, and the club was indebted *o the Domain Board for its efforts in the matter. Mrs . Taylor . then drove a ball through the first hoop and formally declared the : lawns open for the 192425 season. A p”ogressive competition was arranged between A and B grade players. and some interesting and enjoyable garnets were played. During the afternoon a delicious afternoon tea was served by the local club 'members from small tables arranged tastefully in .the shade of the trees, the whole arrangements making a pretty setting with the background of green. At the conclusion of the games Mrs W. J. Towers was declared the winner of the A grade prize, donated by Mrs Barclay, and Mrs Wylde (Te Aroha) carried off the B grade prize, which was given by Mrs McGruer, The president in presenting the prizes heartily congratulated the winners on their success, and on behalf of the club thanked the donors for providing the prizes for competition. The club shows a slight increase in membership this year, and with the improvement that has been made to the lawns by top-dressing an enjoyable season is being looked forward to.
