At the Borough Council meeting laist night a formal resolution was passed appointing the Public Trustee a sinking fund commissioner in connection with the domain improvements loan of £lOOO. The formal opening of the Paeroa Cricket Club for the 1924-25 season will take place on Saturday afternoon next, when a match against the Mataura (Waihi) eleven will be played at the Paeroa domain. At the Borough Council meeting last night six building permits totalling £625 10s were granted. The total value of permits granted for the six months ending September 30 amounted to £7224, which is an increase on the figures for the corresponding period last year.
Cr. Brenan stated at last night s meeting of the Borough Council that while in Wellington he had interviewed the assistant-secretary of the Post and Telegraph Department, and had been advised that 'the architects were at present working on the contractors’ plans for the new post office at Paeroa, and it was expected that tenders would be called and the contract let before the end of December.
At the Thames Valley Jersey Breeders’ Club’s second annual sale ot pedigree cattle at Hikutaia yesterday the auctioneer, Mr G. McCullough, congratulated the members on the complete arrangements made tor the sale, including the excellent get-up of the catalogues of pedigree stock. He also stated that the vendoqs were among the best and most enthusiastic that it had been his privilege to auction stock for.
In reply to the Mayor at last night’s Borough Council meeting Cr. Brenan said that when he was in Wellington he had been advised by the Chief Engineer of Railways that no decision had been arrived at regarding the removal of the existing station buildings to the new site. Cr. Brenan said that he had expressed the Council’s disapproval of the old buildings being moved, and had been assured by the engineer that cine consideration would be given the matter by the department.
The illustrations in this week’s issue of the “N.Z. Sporting and Dramatic Review” reach an incomparably high standard of excellence. In the sporting line appear snapshots of the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting at Alexandra Park, and a page that will carry a general appeal is devoted to the All Blacks’ arrival in England, and to practise games at Devon. Of; Dominion interest are the number of public happenings, while topical overseas events are arrayed in the centre pages. A charming page of modish hats is of special interest to ladies, while the stage and motion pictures are effectively represented Smoker's heart is a distressing malady caused chiefly through the effects of an alkaloid called nicotine which is extremely poisonous. Strong tobacco with a high percentage of nicotine should therefore be avoided. When selecting a brand, ths smoker should not be guided by the appearance alone, because even an apparently mild cigarette tobacco of a bright lemon colour may contain; —and often does contain—an excess of nicotine. It is a peculiar fact that certain N.Z. soils produce a leaf with a very small percentage of nicotine, compared with the foreign type. Take, for instance, our local brands, Riverhead Gold Cut Plug No. 10 and Toasted Navy Cut. There you have an absolutely pure article, which can be smoked continuously without the slightest after effects. It burns to the last shred, leaving the mouth sweet and clean. So highly is New Zealand tobacco commented upon by doctors and experts that smokers should acquaint themselves with the merits of our own product by giving the above brands a fair trial.*
