A BAD STRETCH OF ROAD.
WHAREPOA-KEREPEEHI SECTION. REPAIRS TO BE EFFECTED. Thai practically impassable stretch of the main road from the Plains to Paeroa known as the KerepeehiWbarepoa Road came up for a brief discussion at the Hauraki Plains County Council meeting on Tuesday. Cr. Hare moved that £3o'o of the Netherton Roads Loan and £1165 of the Turua-Netherton Roads Loan be allocated to the Kerepeehi-Wharepoa Road. Cr. Madgwick, in whose riding the roads is situated, opposed the proposition, contending that patching would not be tolerated by the ratepayers, as it would be throwing loan money away. He said they desired the loan work to be done systematically, and the money spent when the best results would be obtained. He did not want a position to arise similar to that at Netheiton, where there was not enough money in the roads loan to finish the work. The scheme had been under-estimated, and expenditure had to be made very judiciously. Cr. Nicholson pointed out that at least six motor-carts had been stuck on that short stretch of road. A gig had been capsized and a woman thrown out. Traffic was at present going round through Turua. The engineer said that until the weather improved and the road dried up the work could not be commenced. He proposed to lay a tram and do thework properly when the rails were available. This would be in three weeks or a month, but it would take that much fine weather for the road to dry up. Cr. Mayn said it was for the council to see that the money was not spent elsewhere. Cr. Hare agreed to withdraw his motion.
