MAORI IN TROUBLE.
DRUNK ON SUNDAY. A young Maori, named Wani Pakinga, was charged at the Police Court this morning with being drunk in Cassrels Street, Paeroa, yesterday forenoon. Defendant pleaded guilty. Constable McClinchy stated that he had arrested the defendant. Nothing was previously known against him, but the offence had beeni committed on a Sunday, and accused had generally made a nuisance of himself. The constable said that there was a fair amount of drinking going on among the natives, and steps would have to be taken to check it. Defendant was convicted and fined the amount of the bail, £l, in default forty-eight hours’ gaol. The same Maori was also charged with a further breach of the licensing laws in that he was alleged to have aided and abetted the supply of a bottle of whisky and three bottles of home-brew stout to a native for consumption off licensed premises. On the application of the police a remand was granted, defendant to appear at the Magistrate’s Court on November 3.
