TROUT FISHING.

SEISON OPENS ON WEDNESDAY. PROSPECTS FOR LOCAL SPORT. The trout fishing season opens on Wednesday next, October 1, and eo far as sport in the Ohinemuri district streams is concerned the prospects appear to be very bright, and there is little chance of sportsmen not having a good season. As has been usual in past seasons, the Waitawheta River promises to afford the' best sport, but the Hikutaia and Komata’ streams were stocked with fry the s'eason belast, and again last season, and a number of fair-sized fish have been seen in these streams recently. Generally speaking, the present indications arc that the fry which has been liberated by the local Acclimatisation Society during the last few years have thriven well, and this year ’trout should be more plentiful in the district than formerly. The streams named are particularly suited to flyfishing, but for minnow and spoon fishing good sport is to be obtained in the Waihou River, from which trout weighing up io 131 b were caught last season.

' Althought it is expected that the Komata and Hikutaia streams will afford plentiful sport, it is as well to -mention that as a rule the trout do not rise as free) r v in the earlier part of the season as they do a month or two later, when the flies and insects are more numerous. However, the older anglers, by using the right kind of flies with their rods, are. rarely disappointed, even in the beginning of the season.

It is worthy of mention that fishing in New Zealand is cheaper .than in any other part of the world. A £1 license each season entitles a holder to fish anywhere in the Dominion, and licenses to ladies and boys are obtainable at a cost of 5s each season. Mr D. Leach, secretary of the Ohinemuri Acclimatisation Society, Paeroa, has a number of licenses to issue, and will be pleased to give any advice on information concerning the sport locally to anyone interested in the pastime. Licenses are also obtainable Mr J. Nevin. Karangahake.
