+ — ■ A telegram was received by Mr W. E. G. Willy yesterday from the Department of Internal Affairs to the effect that the constitution of the Horahia Drainage District had that day’ been gazetted by KOrder-jn-Coun-cil. To-morrow the Ngatea and Turua junior football teams will again try conclusions to decide Which will secure the Patetonga Shield as winner of the season’s competition. The match will be played at Turua. Kerepeehi and Patetonga will meet at Patetonga in a friendly match, as Kerepeehi forfeited a competition game in order to play a match with Coromandel. Word was received yesterday afternoon from Mr H. Poland, M.P., that the Hon. Minister for Education had approved of a grant of an additional £2OO for the purpose of fitting out a standard kitchen, and also laundry equipment, in the new manual school, Paeroa. This can be regarded as very satisfactory, as the original grant of £2OOO will now be available for the erection of the new building itself. For Influenza, take Woods’ Great Peppermint Cure.
The evening service at St. Paul’s Church on Sunday next will be the First Evensong of the Feast of St. Michael and All Angels, which occurs on Monday.
While playing a local resident on the Daunevirke golf links the other day Mr. F. S. Budd, of Hastings, formerly of Thames Road, Paeroa, made a shot that golfers sometimes dream about but very seldom accomplish. Playing a four-bogey hole known as the “Zig-zag,” he pulled his drive badly, and his ball disappeared over the bank towards the river (relates the “Telegraph”). From his lie he was unable to see the pin from below the bank, but using his majshie he drove in the direction in which he thought the ball should go, and landed clean in the cup from a point 200 yards away.
With reference to a paragraph that appeared in one of the Auckland daily papers a couple of days ago, stating that a Mijss M. Paulsina, of Green Lane, Auckland, had in her possession a silver penny, minted in 1872, which she regarded as a lucky possession, we were yesterday shown a similar coin bearing the date 1866, ami .also what may be regarded as rarer still, a silver penny lialf-pemjy, dated 1834, and also a silver twopenny piece stamped with the date 18;',8. These coins are now in the possession of Mr C. B. Gentil, Waihi Read, Paeroa, but he states that, he attaches no particular luck to them, but values them rather on account of their great age.
The Auckland-Thames express was nearly an hour and a half late arriving at Paeroa yesterday afternoon. It appears that when nearing the Cadman Road crossing, about two miles on the Tirohia side of Paeroa, a truck,’ containing fencing posts, for some unknown reason left the rails but remained in an upright position. The train was promptly brought to a standstill without any damage resulting. The contents had to be unloaded from the truck before it could be jacked back on to the rails again, after which the express was able to proceed on its way. Had it not been for the prompt action of the train officials in bringing the train to a standstill a serious accident might easily have resulted.
The current ispue of the “N.Z. Spurting and Dramatic Review” is a very attractive one. The centre pages tri, ways arrest keen attention, and this wek’s array embraces an artistic selection of society, stage, and cirema celebrities, fashion novelties, and peaside rendezvous. The Avondale Jockey Club’s 'spring meeting L represented in a notable series of striking snapshots, and occupies four full pages. The Wanganui fixture and the Waikato Hunt are also depicted. On the links at Middlemore gives another interesting set of photographs. Among a host of up-to-date miscellany are the Avondale totalisator fire, launching of the new ferry boat at Takapuna, Thames v. Auckland football match, N.Z. Ladies Hockey Tournament at Nelson, Auckland Amateur Operatic Society in “San Toy,” boxing at Wembley, etc.
Robert Louis Stevenson once declared, according to one of his biographers: “No woman should marry a man who doesn t smoke, and Stevenson, it must be admitted, knew human nature. Another famous man of ’letters, Bulwer-Lytton, wrote (sec his novel, “What will he do with it ?”) : “He who doth not smoke hath’ either known no greater grief, or refuseth himself the softest consolation next to that which comes from heaven.” As to the harmfulness of the habit, much—very much—depends upon the tobacco. Brands heavily charged with nicotine are best avoided. In that respect and in other respects our own New Zealand grown tobaccos hold pride of place, because they contain comparatively little nicotine and may, therefore, be indulged in ad. lib. without affecting nerves or heart. Doubtless that is why they are finding favour with so many smokers. They are on nale everywhere, and are adapted to all tastes. “Riverhead Gold” is mild aromatic. “Toasted Navy Cut” (Bulldog) a delightful medium, and “Cut Ping No. 10” (Bull’s Head label) a fine full-flavoured tobacco*
