VALUE OF FLAX.
A KOPUARAHI HARVEST. RETURN OF £32 10/- AN ACRE. Another instance of the value of stands of phormium tenax comes to light, this time from Kopuarahi. A settler on the main road has just sold the flax growing on a corner of his sectioi.. to the Awaiti mill at 13s a ton delivered on the wharf. The cutting was done by the purchaser. From four acres it is estimated that 200 tons will be cut, so thei return vzill be £32 10s an acre. All the leaves were cut, but the owner has decided that the rest of the stand must be side-leaf cut. The area recently cut had not previously been harvested, but nearby there is an area estimated to produce an equal amount of leaf per acre that was -harvested four years ago, when the return proved to be £2OO from about four acres. The whole of the section was in flax when taken up, but a great deal was wilfully destroyed so that the land could be grassed. Needless to say, no more flax will be destroyed—rather will it be cultivated.
