HUMPHREY BISHOP CO.
GRAND EVENING’S ENJOYMENT. That thei Paeroa public are not slow to appreciate a good theatrical company when it visits this town was evident last night, when the Humphry Bishop Company made its first appearance at the Gaiety Theatre. A record in box-plan booking was registered, and before 8 o’clock there was scarcely a.n available seat vacant, and a number of people were content to stand. From the rise of the curtain to the grand finale there was not a dull moment. The show was bright, snappy, clever, and free from vulgarity. The huge audience showed its appreciation by demanding an encore of practically every item, and the response from the artists was generous. The orchestra, under the baton of Mr Bishop played a big part in the success and enjoyment of the entertainment. Music, comedy, dance, and burlesque followed one another in quick succession, and several novel song scena were introduced and much enjoyed. The mirth and humour parts of the show were capably handled by Robert Roberts and George Ross, and their smart patter, latest "gags,” and local “hits” caused roars of laughter. Although comedy and laughter predominated, the company was strong vocally, Walter Kingsley’s rendering of “Friend O’ Mine” and “Up from Somerset” being well received, while Louise Meadows and Lalie Whyte, the sopranos of the. company, were particularly pleasing in several concerted numbers. Ngaire Phipson acquitted herself agreeably in song and dance, and the remainder of the company were equally entertaining in their various roles.
