THE Hauraki Plains Gazette With which is incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE. Motto : Public Service. MONDAY. WEDNESDAY. & FRIDAY. WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 1924. LOCAL AND GENERAL.

« Mission Services. —Mr W. J. Mains. C. C. Barlow, postmaster at Waitakaruru, has been authorised to take and receive statutory declarations under section 288 of the Justices of the Peace Act. The junior match West versus Karai.gahake, played at Karangahake on Saturday last, was, apparently, rather a rough game, so far as the visiting players were concerned. Three accidents resulted in G. Wells sustaining a strained knee, A. V. Keighly a strained ankle and W. Hargreaves a dislocated right shoulder. On Monday at the Magistrate’s Court, Paeroa, the Magistrate, Mr J. H. Salmon, granted an order to the Paeroa Borough Council for the demolition of a dwelling belonging to the Moriarty estate situated on the Puke Road. The buildin'g was formerly condemned under section 48 of the Public Health Act. At the Warden’s Court on Monday, before Mr J. H. Salmon, Warden, the following applications were granted : S. A. Shaw, reduction to two men for six months on S.Q.C. 9054, Karangahake ; H. D. Bedford, extension of time for six months on a water-race claim, No. 9055 ; Lloyd, Sheehan, and Party, three months’ protection on S.P.C. No. 208, Komata; Edgar D. White three months’ protection on S.P.C. No. 9256. Frequently complaints are heard about the damage done to. property by straying stock. Some time during Monday night a draught horse, judging by the size of the hoof prints, walked along nearly the whole distance of the grass plot recently put down along a portion of the school frontage in Wood Street. Not only has the grass been eaten off, but the plot has been spoilt by the boofimarks, which in some places have sunk to a depth of several inches. One of the shrubs has also been eaten off and another trampled on. The straying stock nuisance in the borough is very discouraging to those who are making an endeavour to beautify the town. For Influenza, taWe Woods’ Gregt Peppermint Cure.

Presbyterian Church, every evening, 745 p.m.

The Farmers’ Co-op. Auctioneering Co., Hamilton, solicits entries for the stock sale to be held in the Paeroa saleyards on Thursday, September 18.

At the meeting held on Monday evening to form a Paeroa branch of the Young Citizens’ League, Mr E. C. Cutten, S.M., president, replying to the vote of thanks that was accorded him, stated that he could unhesitatingly say the meeting that night was one of the most satisfactory and enthusiastic that it had been his privilege to address in connection with the movement, and he congratulated the citizens on the interest displayed in the welfare of the children. Mr H. Stebbing,- organising secretary; endorsed Mr Cutten’s remarks.

The amount of tobacco consumed by different smokers varies considerably. Some will use a couple of ounces a day, while others are satisfied with lass. The moderate smoker averages perhaps three ounces a week. Indulged in with discretion, tobacco is admittedly rather beneficial than otherwise. It is chiefly a question of nicotine. The habitual use of tobacco heavily charged with nicotine may result in nerve and heart trouble or weakening of the eyesight. As a matter of fact, practically all imported tobaccos contain an excess of nicotine. In that connection, it may interest the reader to learn that the purest tobaccos produced are grown in New Zealand. They contain comparatively such a small percentage of nicotine that they may be indulged ni ad. lib., with safety. ■ A peculiarity of their manufacture, by the way, is that they are all toasted. Hence their fine; flavour. They are adapted to all tastes. Riverhead Gold is mild, Navy Cut (Bulldog) medium, and Cut Plug No. 10 (Bull’s Head) full. You can buy them at any tobacconists.*
