GAIETY THEATRE PICTURES. TO-NIGHT. THE EXCITERS. The Paramount screen version of the stage play “The Exciters,” a picture of rare excellence, co-starring Bebe Daniels and Antonio Moreno, will be shown to-night. The story is one of the ultra-modern girl, a flapper story with a different twist. Miss Daniels has the role of Ronnie Rand, the chief “exciter” at Miami, Florida, while Mr Moreno is cast as Pierre Martel, a man of wealth and social, position, who joins the Intelligence Service of the United States and, at the risk of his life, becomes a member of a band of crooks, whom he purposes to run down. In order to obtain evidence Martel enters the Rand home to loot the safe—this is to keep up appearances and to gain the confidence of the thugs. Pierre meets Ronnie through an aeroplane acci, dent, which results in their marriage after a few hours’ courtship. When Ronnie learns that she is the wife of a supposed crook the action becomes rapid and dramatic. How the truth is finally revealed is splendidly shown in the ensuing scenes. SOCIAL AND EUCHRE. TO-MORROW EVENING. At the Gaiety Theatre to-morrow night an Anglican grand social and euchre tournament will be held. No efforts have been spared by the organisers to ensure au enjoyable evening’s pleasure. Good music is to be provided for dancing, and a number of prizes have been offered for competition in the euchre tournament. HUMPHREY BISHOP COMPANY. BOX PLANS OPEN TO-DAY. The box plans open to-day at Flatt’s for the forthcoming visit of the famous English Humphrey Bishop Comedy and Operatic Company at the Gaiety Theatre, Paeroa, on Tuesday, September 9. The news of the great and unprecedented success of this company in Auckland has preceded it, and we are quoting the Auckland Press in saying that it is the brightest, breeziest, and finest show of its kind that has ever visited New Zealand. Comedy is the keynote, and with such comedians as George Ross, Robert Roberts, Harry Avondale, and Edward Elliott to lead them there is not a dull moment all through the show. Although comedy and laughter predominate, on the vocal side the company is especially strong, and to hear one of their operatic finales accompanied by the Humphrey Bishop orchestra, it would seem impossible to believe that there was not a full real grand opera chorus behind them. The company is exactly as presented in Auckland and Melbourne, and every artist is a well-known London performer. The Auckland "Herald” in its notice of the opening performance, remarked : “The verdict of last night’s audience upon the excellence of the Humphrey Bishop Company has ensured the success of its whole season. Li fact, Mr Bishop had the greatest difficulty in proceeding with his programme owing to the enthusiastic insistence of the audience in asking for more. The secret of this success was not only the cleverness of every turn —each member of the company has talent)—but to the ‘ginger’ which everyone instilled into the work. The Humphrey Bishop Company created a furore. Another innovation tnat is to be found with the Humphrey Bishop Company is that it is touring the Dominion at popular prices, although the show is being toured in Its entirety.” The slogan “Book before you sleep” might well be applied.
