THE “DEATH RAY.”
TEST ON GOVERNMENT OFFICIAL. SURVIVED THE ORDEAL. Durnig a discussion in Parliament at Home on a supplementary vote for £350,000 for the Government airship scheme Mr Maxton (Socialist, Bridgeton) expressed the hope that the Air Service staff would_not be exposed to undue risks in the research experiments. He was told that during a recent test of the so-called “death ray” one of the highest experts of the Air Ministry was placed within ten yards of this deadly ray, which was supposed to destroy men and machines at a distance of several miles. What had become of him ?
Mr I.each, Under-Secretary for Air, said it was true that one of the experts, who seemed to be of a rather sceptical turn of mind, placed himself in the path of the “death ray” as part of tlie tent. He was glad to be able to inform the House that the official in question was doing well. (Laughtei.) The official mentioned by Mr Leach was Major H. E. Wimpcris, Acting Director of Scientific Research at the Air Ministry.
