HAURAKI PLAINS COUNTY
INSPECTOR’S REPORT. The county inspector, Mr W. J. Clare, reported to the council meeting yesterday as foliows ■ “Ngatea Bridge.—All bolts throughout the bridge have been tightened and additional washers added , where required. A large number of bolts required screwing for three-quarters of an inch. The platform round the winch and access to same have been provided with 2in decking and guardrails, and the lower .stand has been closely boarded on two sides. I propose le.aving all the painting and tarring of this bridge until the fine weather sets in. “Since my last report I have made an inspection of the damage caused by the scow Torea and have found that one piece of hardwopd waling 20ft by 9in by Bin requires replacing. The estimated cost for labour and material is £8 14s. “In connection with the tar-sealing of part of the decking of the bridge I have, as instructed, built a screen for the metal and a platform on which to mix the material. “Hikutaia Bridge.—This bridge has been repaired during the month, as instructed by your engineer. Heavy Traffic.—Heavy traffic notices have been posted at various road junctions in the county. “Machinery Depot.—All the material has been delivered on the site and is now being sorted. I hope to make a beginning with the concrete work during the coming week. “Straying Stock. —A number of cattle and horses have been impounded during the month, and I have sent final notices to two Patetonga and two Orpngo settlers for allowing pigs. to damage roadside drains, and to one Patetcnga settler for grazing cows on the roads. I ask authority to take action against these men at once. “House Drainage,—During the month I received a complaint frpm a resident at Kerepeehi in regard to drainage from a house nearby. As no otulet is provided this will become a nuisance. I have given formal notice to endeavour to remedy same. “Vehicle Licenses. —All carriers and motor owners plying for hire whom I have noticed during the month have been served with renewal notices. “Dog Registration.—Sixty-five dogs have been registered during the month, bringing the total to 780. This work is now completed with the exception of a few defaulters, who have been served with notice to register. "Building Permits.—Buildings to the value of £965 have ben approved of during the month. These include a five-roomed house, a slaughterhouse, two additions to dwellings, and three ‘cowsheds. “Unlicensed carrying.—I have traced .the owner of the two motor lorries that were carting flax at Netherton at Easter-time and served him with a notice on June 18 to comply with the council’s by-laws, but up to the present I have not received a reply. “Ccunty Chambers. —This contract is just about completed, and two or three days should see' all the small details cleaned up. A few, small items will probably require attention during tne maintenance period.”
