TENNIS BALL.

EVENING AT NGATEA. THE EVENT OF THE SEASON. As was expected, the Hauraki Plains Tennis Association’s annual ball, held at Ngatea on Wednesday last, was a brilliant success. Just as during the summer the game of tennjg draws people from all. parts of the Plains, so during the Winter the annual ball and presentation cf trophies exerts the same influence, and close on two hundred persons were present. Officers of the association and a committee of Ngatea ladies had left no stone unturned to ensure .the function being a success, and their efforts were amply rewarded. The hall was delightfully decorated with paper streamers of the association’s colours and with bunting, and the floor had received a great deal of attention and was in splendid order until marred by the excessive quantity of grit brought in on boots and shoes. The music by the Morrinsville Jazz Band left nothing to be desired, and the night being cold, dancers needed no urging. A dainty supper was handed round about midnight, and dancing was kept np until the early hours of the morning. An innovation for the Plains was a claret cup, ad this proved a great attraction. During the supper adjournment Mr P, R. Henry, on behalf of the president of the Tennis Association, presented the trophies won by the clubs and players during the past season. The Laidlaw Cup and the Hayward Shield were handed to Mr G. J. Walker for the Turua Club, which had won both the A and B grade competitions. Mr W. E. Hale’s medal for the ladies’ handicap competition was won by Mrs F. Clotworthy, of Turua, and Mr J. Terrill’s medal for the men’s handicap was won by Mr W. Murphy, of Hopai. The association’s medals for the handicap doubles were won by Mrs Bird and Miss Duffy, of the Pateroa club, and Messrs S. and E. Coppins, of the Hopai club.
