MAN FOUND DEAD.
FACE DOWNWARDS IN SWAMP. HOUGH JOURNEY TO PAEROA. Yesterday morning at 9.30 o’clock tlie police received a telephone message from Mr L. Buchanan, farmer and sawmiller, at The Wires, near Wbangamata, to the effect that one of his employees named Thomas Bullard had been found dead in a. small swamp near his hut. The discovery was made by Messrs Downs and Buchanan. The information that the police obtained is that on Sunday last at about 3,30 p m. Mr Buchanan had occasion to nass deceased's hut, where he spoke to him Deceased complained of having a cold on the chest, but he though he would be able to start work the following morning. On Monday evening, after dark, Mr Downs was retiring to his quarters, and had to pass deceased's hut. He called out and, receiving no response, entered the hut, but could not find Bullard. He then went to Buchanan’s place and notified him that Bullard was missing. Early next morning they made a search and discovered deceased laying in a semi) swamp face downwards. Constable McClinchy and Mi A. Martin went to The Wires, arriving there at 5 o’clock last night. The body had to be sledged over to Maratoto, which was no easy task. Before gaining the main track the bed of the creek had to be followed for some three-quarters of a mile. Th.is was exceedingly difficult, owing to darkness and the rough track. At Maratoto a trap was met. and the party arrived in Paeroa at 3 a.m. An inquest is to be l held to-day.
