THE Hauraki Plains Gazette. With which is incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE. Motto: Public Service. MONDAY. WEDNESDAY. & FRIDAY. WEDNESDAY, JULY 2, 1924. LOCAL AND GENERAL.

The following vital statistics for the month of June for Paeroa were supplied by the local registrar (Mr J. G. McDougall) : Births, 9 ; deaths, 1; marriages, 2. There was a very small yarding of stock at the Farmers’ Auctioneering Company’s monthly Ngatea sale on Monday last, and practically no business was done. Farmers have not the feed to fatten stock, so most of the yarding consisted of. rough and inferior store cows. These were not in demand, so the prices realised were comparatively low. About a fortnight ago Mr W. J. Hall, the well-known Jersey cattle breeder, of Matatoki, shipped a line of three pedigree Jersey heifers to Fiji in fulfilment of an order for a private purchase! This is the first occasion on which pedigree stock has been exported from tlie Thames Valley outside the Dominion, a fact which speaks highly of the class of stock bred by Mr Hall. The time having arrived when payment becomes due for the Tui'tia street lights for another year efforts are now being made to raise the necessary funds. It will be remembered that last year portion of the money was raised by voluntary subscription, but the greater part was collected by means of a concert organised for the purpose. This year the concert party is endeavouring to raise the whole of tlie amount, and to that end will stage an entertainment on Thursday next wheih, aside from tli<? worthiness of the object, should be very largely attended, as the concert promises to be of outstanading merit. To find a strange key in the back door of her house which she had previously locked was the unusual experience of a Timaru resident (relates an exchange). She was sitting on the verandah of the house waiting for a friend, and upon her non-arrival decided to go indoors. Imagine her surprise when she found that the back door, which she had previously locked. the key being hidden, had a key from another door inserted in the lock. On looking round she discovered a bundle of articles close by. It is surmised that an unknown person while attempting to enter the .house heard the owner and made off in haste, leaving behind the tell-tale bundle.
