DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL

MEETING OF PAEROA COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the Paeroa District High School Committee was held on Saturday evening last, Mr E. E. Gillman (chairman) presiding over the following: Messrs C. H. Pascoe, H. J. Hayward, W. T. Power, R. G. Southby, W. Purdie, R. Thorp, C. T. Mettam, N. C. Busby, and W. L. Lawrence (secretary). Mr G. H. Taylor, the headmaster, was alsp present. The Education Board wrote authorising the appointment of Mr R. Thorp to the vacancy on the committee caused by the resignation of Mr W. H. Taylor. Mr Thorp was welcomed by the chairman on taking his seat at the table. REMOVAL OF BUILDING. In response to a request from the committee Mr A. Burns, a member bf the Education Board, wrote advising that he had brought- the matter, of the removal of the old wooden building to its permanent site and reconditioning same before the board at its meeting on June 4. Mr Burns stated that the board’s architect had considered the estimate too high, but a resolution had been passed authorising the architect to act, providing the removal could be done at a reasonable price. The headmaster advised that the board’s supervisor would be visiting Paeroa during the week, and he would then go further into the matter. GROUND IMPROVEMENTS. The chairman reported that owing to the continuously wet weather it had not been possible to complete the proposed improvements to the schoolgrounds. Difficulty had also been experienced in getting further supplies of spawls from the quarry. PRIMARY SCHOOLS’ ASSOCIATION. It was decided that a delegate from the committee could not attend the animal meeting of the Primary School Committees’ Association in Auckland, and that a member of the executive of the association should be asked io represent Paeroa and move the remit in connection with the request to the department to institute the average roll attendance. TECHNICAL HIGH SCHOOL. At the invitation of the committee Mr H. Poland, M.P., attended the meeting, and the chairman explained that the committee had decided to make an endeavour to have a technical high school established at Paeroa, in lieu of a manual training school. Mr Poland said that he thought the move was a wise one. The headmaster supplied details of the functions of a technical, high school, and quoted the approximate number of pupils who would be eligible to attend from Paeroa. The chairman pointed out that some

years ago the department had purchased some fourteen acres of land in Paeroa for the purpose. Mr Poland assured the committee that he would do all in his power to help the project along, and it was decided that if possible the chairman should go to Wellington and, with the assistance of Mr Poland, interview the Minister for Education. It was agreed that it appeared to be. useless to make further efforts to have manual classes established in Paeroa. EXTRA PLAYING AREA. In view of the insufficiency of room in Hie boys’ playground it was decided to make application to the Borough Council for permission to use a further portion of Lewis Street as a playing area. VISITING COMMITTEE. Messr lS Purdie and. Power were appointed a visiting committee for the ensuing month. ACCOUNTS; Accounts totalling £8 18s 6d were passed for payment.
