THE FLOOD AT NGATEA.
WATER RECEDING SLOWLY. IMPEDED BY GAPS IN STOP-BANK. Since the highest spring tide on the night of Tuesday last the Piako River has fallen steadily and the flood water has been able to get away slowly. It ceased to flow over the road east of the bridge on Friday, but the paddocks are still under water. The breach in the stop-bank on Mr Louch’s property was repaired by Lands Department workmen on Friday. The numerous cuts made in the stop-bank are allowing the flood water to flow out at low tide, but their excessive number has prevented them being closed to shut out the incoming tide, .so that littl.e benefit is being derived. On the township side of the river most of the land is clear of water at low tide, but when the rising tides close the flood-gates the water from the back country backs up and floods the low-lying land. Particularly heavy rain fell on Saturday, and for a. while conditions were almost as bad as at the height of the flood.
