<• — DAMAGE TO PRIVATE PROPERTY. AID REFUSED BY GOVERNMENT. In connection with the flooding .of the Ol'inemuri River on the night of April 3, when the residents of Paerua on the Waihi Road in the vicinity pt the Convent suffered severely, assessments of the damage done to the various properties was made and forwarded to the Public Works Department, Wellington. The following reply has now been received by Mr E. W. Porritt from the Engineer-in-Chiei of the Department, under date of Maj’ 5 ’ — "Wiih reference to the letters recently forwarded to the Department giving assessments of damage suffered by Mr and Mrs C. Vincent, Messrs .J. Couper, B. Sheriff, and Ah Hing during the recent flood in the Ohinemuti River, 1 am directed to express the M ’tisler's regret that such inconvenience and loss should have been experienced in connection with this and similar floods over a wide extent of country, but r have to state that th? Department cannot recognise liability for compensation in respect of these losses. As far as can be judged the particular losses mentioned in youi’ communications were due entirely to the exceptional rainfall and the specially rapid rate of ‘run-off’ from the catchment area of. the Ohinemuri River.”
