DISTRICT NEWS.
NGATEA. FARMERS’ UNION. Twelve months ago the Ngatea branch of the N.Z. Farmers’ Union decided to suspend operations for a year to give the local branch of the Dairy Farmers’ Union a clear field. As the latter union in the meantime has ceased to operate, it was decided at the adjourned annual meeting of the Farmers’ Union branch, held in the HaH on Saturday atfernoon, fo resume operations. The necessity of some such organisation was stressed by several speak ers, and it was pointed out that the branch could become a power in the district if supported as it deserved to be. To that end it was suggested that the meetings should be made more attractive, it haying been found in the part that farmers would not trouble to attend. THE RAILWAY dispute. The railway trouble was brought up- for discussion when a speaker referred to a circular he had received from the Minister for Railways. He asked for an expression of opinion as to whether the branch should support the A.S.R.S. or the Government. A copy of. the circular was read, and it was decided to send a telegram to the Hon. Minister for Railways congratulating him on the stand he had taken and informing him that the branch would do everything in its power to assit the Government in the event of a strike of railwaymen. The opinion was ’ expressed that there were very few dairy farmers making as much as these public survants, though they had to work twice a.s many hours a day, and that while the objective among some sections of the community was to get an increase oi wages or a reduction in working time, this was not applicalble to the primary producer, who had to work longer and harder to meet the resultant increase in the cost of living without a compensating increase in the price of his produce. KOrUARATH, CRICKET. The match between the two Kopuarahi teams which was postponed from March 22 was played out on Saturday last. The A team made a total score of 134, three runs below the B team’s total, giving the latter a three-point win and making the two teams equal in the competition. It was intended in the event of a draw to play off, but owing to the lateness of the sea ■ son this was cancelled and the banner will be hung in the school in the names of both teams.
