THE RAILWAY STRIKE.

little effect at paeroa. CONDITIONS BEING COPED WITH. Apart from a certain -amount of general inconvenience and, perhaps, a lit; le disorganisation, Paeroa does not appear to be suffering greatly as a resull of the railway strike at present. O-.ung to the central situation of the town ingress and egress arc eompaiatively simple matters. The various local taxis arc at present experiencing a record harvest. Soon after S' o’clock yesterday cars began to arrive in Paeroa from the Waikato, on route to Thames, Waihi, and Hauraki Plains, and later on in the nay several large char-a-bancs from Thames and Hamilton were noticed in the streets. Up to the present there have been no regular motor services outward from Paeroa organised, but the local taxis are running .to all parts of the district as required. CREAM CARTAGE. The Paeroa branch of the N.Z. Coop. Dairy Co., Ltd., has been put to some inconvenience to arrange for the carting of cream, hut on inquiry this morning it was learned that satisfactory arrangements have been made for the cartage of cream from Thames to Paeroa and from Waihi to Pt.eroa by motor lorry. Once the service gets into running order it is expected that the delivery of cream at ■the Paeroa factory will be sufficient and satisfactory. MAIL SERVICES. Practically no disorganisation as regards the receipt and delivery of mails is being experienced. The local postmaster, Mr J. G. McDougall, stated this morning that a motor service had been arranged for the carriage of mails between Paeroa and Waihi at least once, daily, Paeroa and Tn times once daily, Paerea and Te Archa once daily, and 'to Auckland daily by steamer either from Paeroa or Thames. The Auckland “Star” ea’’, from Hamilton, which arrives in Paeroa daily at 3 a.m., is also bringing an Auckland, Waikato, and Southern mail. The Taniwha, which arrived from Auckland this morning, brought 40 bags of mail matter from Avckand and South for Paeroa and intermediate offices. GASWORKS. On inquiry from Mr Pearson, manager of the Ohinemuri Light and Power Co., Ltd., the information was given this morning that the local gasworks were in a fortunate position as regards the stock of coal on hand. Mr Pearson estimated that the supply would be sufficient' for about four weeks. In any case, he said, the coal used for gas-making purposes was cither Westport or Newcastle, and would be sea borne to Paeroa. HOUSEHOLD COAL. The local coaldealers are dependent on the Taupiri and Pukemiro mines for their household coal suppile*. They stated this morning that only very limited supplies were on hand. If the strike is at all protracted it appears as if there will be a .seriou- shortage of coal for domestic use as in addition to the difficult'of transport from the Waikato, four of the mines in that area have already closed down owing to shortage of railway trucks. MR. POLAND'S ACTION. The following telegram was despatched to the Prime Minister at Wellington by Mr H. Poland, M.P., this morning :— “I am strongly of the opinion that the dispute between the Government an l the railway workers is of sufficient seriousness to the whole com ■■ munity a,s well as to the railwaymen to justify immediate calling together of Parliament to endeavour to arrive at a speedy and satisfactory settlement.”
