Among the spectators was the proprietor, who was waiting to open up for business. Consequently he had tn effect a burglarious entrance in the morning. The panel of glass was ICmoved ami the door opened after a little delay. Woods' Great Peppermint Cure, For Coughs and Colds, never fails.

The huge quantity of earth brought down on the Government railway line between Waikino and Karangahake by the recent flood has now been cleared away and the normal train services between Waihi and Paeroa have been restored. A couple of men have, however, been kept on the line clearing away :ho last of the debris and mak--snu necessary little adjustments hoie and there. Considering the amount of work involved, and that slip followed slip just as the gangs had about got the lines clear, it may be said th»t on the whole remarkably good progress was made.
The Home, of Good Value, Paeroa, is at present displaying a splendid variety of travellers' samples of new season’s coats and costumes. MiGamble has an attractive advertisemeat on page 1 of this issue, and he cordially invites an inspection of his new stocks.*

The Hauraki Plains Athletic and Sports Club held its annual ladies’ picnic in the Recreation Ground, Turua, on Saturday. However, as there was only a very small attendance until the afternoon, and then football proved a greater attraction, only a few children’s events were got off. The only adult event was the ladies’ woodchopping. Cutting underhand, Mrs Williams divided an Bin log in good <ime, and wa.s closely followed by Mrs Wallace and Mrs Zeigler. A number of Dunedin confectioners report that in consequence of Um reduction of certain lines of chocolates manufactured by Dominion firms the demand had increased, in many instances by over 100 per cent. Tablets of nut milk chocolate which were now selling at half their former price were evidently being rushed by sweet addicts, and one shopkeeper stated that he was finding it hard to obtain sufficient stock to cope with hi- customers’ newly acquired taste for this particular delicacy.
A humorous incident occurred at the farewell social to the Rev. McArUiur on Tuesday night at Cambridge when one of the church members made him a personal presentation. Addressing Mr McArthur, the donor said "Mac” was a splendid man, but "one thing thou lackefh, ’ and the presentation was made to supply that want. On opening up the mysterious parcel, it was found to contain a “hard-hitter.” Mr McArthur ha,s been a member of the ‘‘hatless brigade” for many years, and when he donned the presentation hat- about four sizes too small for his head—the audience rocked with laughter.
