Captain H. Peacock continues to make steady progress at the Thames Hospital. Yesterday he was out in the grounds for a few hours.
Mr H. E. Goonan has been appointed sta'ioninaster at Te Arolia, to succeed Mr W. S. Thompson, who has been transferred to Taihape.
Mr F. S. Battley, adjuster for the fire insurance companies, Auckland, was in Paeroa yesterday in connection with the recent lire in Normanby Road.
The death of Mr Thomas Sinclaire, at one time a member of the staff of the “Hauraki Tribune,” Paeroa, . an .l for a number of years of the “Wairoa Bell,” Dargaville, took place on Fridav last. The deceased contributed many articles and poems to various N-w Zealand and Australian periodicals under the nom-de-plume d “Manuka.”
By the death of Miss Ellen Peden Lorimer at the residence of her niece, M”.s D. Craig, Puke Road, Paeroa, on Sunday last another of; the fast diminishing band of early settlers was removed. Miss Lorimer and her sister, the late Mrs J. McAndrew, arrived in New Zealand from the north of Ireland by the ship Ida Zeigler in the year 1864. After residing in Auckland for sonic time they removed to Thames, from which town Mr McAndrew, his wife, and Miss Lorimer came io Paeroa some 36 years ago, regaling here almost continuously up to the time of their deaths. The deceased lady was of a very retiring disposition, and had suffered illhealth for some time.
