BOXING TOURNAMENT.

AMATEURS AT WAIHI.

A SPLENDID PROGRAMME.

The Waihi Boxing Association opens the 1924 season with an anlateur carnival in the King’s Theatre, Waihi, on Saturday evening, March 22, and a capital programme will be submitted to lovers of the noble art of selfdefence. The committee is absolutely alive to the fact* that the public lik? fresh faces, a|nd on this score they will be well catered for, as no less than seven lads from other centre will be matched against the local boys.

Clarrie Blackburn, the well-known clever professional welter, is bringing three good lads from Frankton in Snowey Crompton, Blue Hamilton, an-l Burt Hynson, and expects to return with some of the local scalps. Sjnowe.v Crompton will meet Jim Broadfoot, tiro Goldfields champion, Bert Hynson will meet Laurie Leach, and Blue Hamilton will meet Jim Coiledge or Meehan, of Paeroa. As Slacker is unable to meet Clarke (Pirongia), Charlie . Carr will accommodate Clarke, and this should be a fight worth going a long way to sec. Alf. Bromwich, of Ngarttawahia, who is'an old favourite, is bringing Bell to meet Will Colledge, and Burkhardt, _>f Wharepoa, is bringing Grath Dunstan, a heavyweight, to try conclusions with Hughes, the local heavy. The two lads Angus and Broadfoot, who gave s ucb a splendid exhibition at the las: tournament, and were warmly congratulated by New Zealand’s premier referee, Mr Sampson, will again be on hand to decide who ha,s made the most progress since last tournament. Warne and Neilan will also dispute supremacy.

On paper this is the best programme of many good ones the Waihi association has submitted, and if the public are alive to the quality of the contestants an overflow house should besthe result.

Alf. Bromwich, an old Paeroa boy, and one of. 1 the cleverest lightweights of bis day, is being approached with a view of giving a four-round exhibition spar witli Clarrie Blackburn. Should this matter be satisfactorih' arranged the resulting contest should be an education for the younger aspirants in the game.

Mr Sampson wilt be the third man in the ring.

Mr H. Poland, M.P., has intimated his acceptance of the invitation of the committee to be present.
