CRUEL TREATMENT OF PIGS.
(To the Editor). Sir,—Will you allow me- space in your columns to write an emphatic protest at the cruel manner in which pigs are dealt, with at the Paeroa railway receiving yards. It appears that pigs, purchased on the Hauraki Plains, are brought in by motor-lorry. On ai rival at Paeroa they are transhipped from the motor-iony into the yards preparatory to trucking. It is in the process of moving die animals from the motor-lorry to the yards that the brutal treatment is accorded. The pigs arc pushed and kicked out of the lorry, and are allowed to fall.or drop a distance of nearly four Feet on to gravel, stones, and earth. I. have seen them limping away, and it stands to reason the injuries sustained in falling must be very severe, as well as painful. Some of the residents of this locality have already warned the driver of the lorry to stop the practice. A small movable race 'could be provided at a cojst of a few shillings and the brutal method discontinued. Cruelly to dumb animals must not be tolerated, and every effort, should oe made to take proceedings against those who are responsible for it. PIG ROOTER. George Street, Paeroa.
